Re: Miele honeycomb drum: does it damage cotton clothes?

Hi Andrea (incidentally the italian guy who had problems with the honeycomb drum is named Andrea too… ),
I don’t exactly know what trainers are but I think you should pay a careful inspection to the drum of your washer. If everything appears to be normal then you should address yourself to Miele representatives in your country. If they are only the half supportive of people of Miele Italia then you should solve your problems quickly and satisfactorily. That’s for sure.

Maybe the holes in the drum, at the intersection of the hexagons, are not properly smoothed/deburred. This might cause the toweling loops to become snagged when they penetrate a hole, for instance, on spin.

Miele appliances are made to the highest specifications.
The honeycomb drum is amazingly smooth, so I can only imagine this is an isolated incident.
I would imagine a third party interference here, causing the damage IMHO.

TESTED to wash a Water Lily

    New HoneycombCare System

After the world’s first electronically controlled washing machine in 1978 Miele’s new HoneycombCare System, featured on the W2000 range of washing machines once again represents a milestone in the development of washing machines.

The most eye-catching characteristic of this new drum is the smooth slightly sculptured honeycomb-patterned surface. Fewer, and smaller holes situated at the lowest points of the drum where three hexagons meet, result in a number of benefits:

A thin film of water cushions the garments from the drum. This reduces both breakage of individual fibres and pilling on delicate items.
After spinning, laundry is easier to remove from the machine, as the smoothness of the drum prevents garments from “sticking” to it.
Mechanical strain on the laundry during spinning is reduced. The new honeycomb drum does not leave a pattern on the laundry and also greatly reduces the stress caused by fabric penetrating the drum holes.
Higher spin speeds even for delicate items are now made possible so garments take a shorter time to dry and suffer less stress during tumble drying.

The new HoneycombCare System is so gentle that it even protects the most delicate items. Tests that we have carried out even included washing a water lily. Of course – what else would you expect from Miele – it came out undamaged. The WfK-Cleaning Technology Research Institute came to similar conclusions (21.12.2000) and confirmed our findings:

“The Miele honeycomb drum was the only one on which no hole pattern was left on laundry. Miele’s honeycomb drum offers considerable advantages in terms of overall water consumption. In terms of strength loss (of the tested garments), the Miele honeycomb drum shows significant benefits compared with the other machines.”

Re: Miele honeycomb drum: does it damage cotton clothes?

As suggested by the others, please inspect the drum and try to ascertain if the damage was caused by your washing those joggers (trainers) or a manufacturing fault.

I have a WT2670 myself and cannot find fault with the machine except for the price.

Also, if you find the wash action too vigorous for your cottons, you can activate “Gentle Action” found in the Settings menu. In the words of Miele, “Activating gentle action reduces the drum action and is suitable for washing slightly soiled items more gently. It should be activated for garments with a single bar under the care label and for articles which feel too hard after they have been dried.”
