Cheap replacements are one of the reasons machines are being scrapped under the age of two years or less. A sub £200 washer every two to three years is economic stupidity compared to a £450< machine that will last nearer to 10 years at the least and not break down as often in between.
It is a major strip down and unfortunately may not be covered by the five year manufacturers parts guarantee that your machine has.
I would definitely consider having the machine repaired, a decent local engineer may even manage to extricate the offending wire without removing the drum and it would cost much less than buying a cheap, throwaway machine even if they had to remove the drum assembly.

Thanks Jim,
I’ll get the yellow pages out tomorrow. Hopefully I will get an honest local guy – the last thing I want is a large bill and no solution.
Your help has been invaluable, thank you very much.

Why not click on “find an engineer” at the bottom of your post.
You`ll get someone who has signed up to the UKW charter.

Jim,
Nearly 24 hours and no response from the two companies I clicked through to. However, I have spoken to a local engineer. His advice was that Hoover drums are very difficult to get out and hence a repair would be uneconomic. However, he did say that the drum is very tough and we should tolerate the noise and just run it – the most likely outcome being that the wire would further break-up and end up in the sump. This seams good advice since the worse case is that it damages the machine – but we would be writing it off anyway if the repair was uneconomic.
What are your thoughts on this?
Paul.

Its not an easy job by any means but to say removal of a drum to get out a piece of bra wire on this machine is uneconomic is something I cannot agree with.
I do know of lots of people that carry on using the machines with bra wires inside, the downside is the noise and the fact that it can rip the clothes depending on where it is. They can and do break up, blocking pumps and even puncturing hoses. If the machine was 8 or 10 years old then running it like this would be an option but I would still advise getting it sorted properly.
If you send me a PM with the names of the companies you tried to contact and your postcode I will see if we can move things along.
If you request a quote, most decent firms will give you an idea of costs over the phone.

You poor thing! Having to go to all this trouble for an over shoulder boulder holder. I liberated myself many moons ago by throwing away my Bra & have never looked back. Ditch the Bra’s Sisters, your boobs will thank you for it!

No worries. Nice to have a change of scenery. Reinforces the benefits of having a Garmin in the van 😆
