Nearly all bearings on a washing machine or Washer/Dryer will fail due to the inner seal failing and water passing into the bearings.
There are a couple of tell tail signs for this, one is the bearings rust which will be even more apparent when it hasn’t been used for a while..

Another is dirty rust/grease marks on the bottom rail of the machine base similar to that apparent in your picture.
Experience has taught us if the shaft is even slightly damaged/scored then there is an extremely high chance the bearing will fail within an unacceptable time. Only right to fit the shaft at the same time.

Hi yes FYI I never gave a picture of my shaft it was CambridgeDave, Glad this helped SpudULike, as like I said without this forum would have been alot harder for me its always handy to have some advice from others who have been in a similar experience, I agree with Twoten that bearings will indeed fail with water and dirt ingress just that it didn’t seem to be the case with mine and a good seal is needed and its worth checking the shaft and seals to make sure its thoroughly clean and smooth.
Of course a bearing will fail without any dirt etc because of its very nature, it makes sense that a washing machine going once or twice or even more times a day is going to wear out parts more than one being used once a week. Its been 5 months since fixed the washing machine and with at least one wash a day throughout all those months I think I have got me moneys worth out of it and still going strong.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has this kind of problemFebruary 22, 2007 at 11:00 am #188028SpudULike

Finished the job yesterday, all went in very easily, except when I forgot to put the concrete weight on the front of the drum before fitting it to the machine (which added an extra 20 minutes) apart from that there are no leaks, and most importantly no noise. I forgot how quiet the machine was 🙂
Thanks again for the info 😆
