Job completed this evening, new pump and another new timer fitted and its away. I removed the pump cover and found one, yes one, strand of the copper windings had melted (due to the piece of glass caught in the pump)into the toc which is pushed inbetween the windings. Its melted the insulation on the toc (which hasnt blown interestingly) and casued the short circuit.
Its cost me a packet but its a reminder never to get too complacent in this trade.
