Yuk! It was a bit clogged inside the filter, some aluminium rust to wire brush away too. Half the filter was clear, but probably enough to restrict air flow. I also poured a little hot water down the filter housing in case some sludge was lurking beneath.
Refrained from cutting the gauze as you suggested, felt sorry for the fan which could get clogged up with gunge. Always an option for next time.
Until I have a full wash of wet clothes to check it with, can’t be sure there’s another problem with the thermistor circuit. However the dryer ducting is much cooler now, with the end connected to the drum hotter than above the element. That’s a result.
Certainly appears to work better, and I can’t thank iadom enough for his great help.
Attached for information photo of my thermal cut-out switch. Maybe others are the same but it does require breaking the seal to get the paperclip in.
Just for information my machine appears to be a WD640P. Not sure if the ‘P’ is any different?

Yes yours is different., the P means it’s polar white, 😀 You should have removed the gauze as advised .

Good news! Did a dry cycle today and it performed well. I could see (from my electricity monitor) that the dryer heater was switching on and off, so that confirms the circuit and thermistor is working ok. The gauze filter can be removed next time it fails! At least I know where to look now. Many thanks.
Hopefully others who find this forum with ongoing saga can learn from it too.January 5, 2015 at 10:21 am #250043Hamgray

Hi again!
If you are there iodom, I have another strange symptom yesterday, hopefully you can explain?
I did a ‘high heat’ dry cycle and after about 30-60 mins (can’t be sure exactly) I heard the machine was doing a fast spin cycle! Everything seemed hot inside, so assuming the dry section was still working, but why the spin? Any ideas?
Many thanksJanuary 5, 2015 at 11:09 am #250044iadom

Thermal spin, perfectly normal part of its operation. 😉
