I very much doubt the discerning Asda purchaser will worry too much about their bacteria levels. They are just following the current trend for quick wash cycles and wash results rarely come into the equation. Those that demand a quickwash option are the same bunch that never seperate their wash labels or buy decent detergents. Russell Hobs & Asda are just fulfilling that type of customers demands. Horse for courses.

I’m under no illusion that this is anything other than a response to consumer demands. The most common complaint I hear about modern machines is, “It takes so much longer to do a cycle than my old one did.” The great thing about cheap, short life-cycle machines, from the consumers’ and manufacturers’ points of view, is that they can quickly respond to changes in fashion and other consumer wishes. Just like in the clothing industry. These guys have done their market research.
There is no reason why they would ask us. We are of no importance, except to a few weirdos (I don’t mean quickwash, obviously) who wish to live in the past.

You perhaps missed the point.
That whole debacle was a PR event on behalf of Wallmart trading as Asda to accomplish two things so far as I can see:
Establish that Asda is an electricals retailer.
Establish that they have a “fast” washer answering the complaints about cycle times which, at the same time gives the impression that they are market leaders in that regard. Whether it does or not really isn’t a concern to the retailer, all they need is for people to believe it does.
To make it even better and more valid, they plop a respected brand name (or was) on a pile of Chinese tat.
All it’s intended to do is get bodies into Asda looking for this and hopefully buying a weekly shop at the same time… ka-ching.

OK, perhaps I wandered off topic a bit but all that corporate stuff about what this and that retailer is doing doesn’t interest me.
How was it a debacle, though? Was it not successful for them?

Oh yes, successful for them as they got a story in almost every national paper and a load of net sites. That I suspect was the point.
It’s just a pity that a 12 minute wash and to have stuff actually being clean is probably a complete fantasy.
