Hi Folks.
My “case” turned out slightly different. On reading the instruction card for the pat test it seems that the parameters are set too low, ie the “Touch Tester” pass was set at 1.0ma, far too low.
This pat tester can be pre programmed but it needs an access code that the site manager does not have, nor does he have the authority to change the settings.
I will be writing to the school to advise them to consult a member of the IEE for advice. Suffolk County Council should have one of them behind a desk somewhere. Thanks for all your Help folks.
Regards,
Mike

Hi Mike: Makes you wonder if the Site Manager actually went on a PAT testing course or was he Just given a PAT tester with pre-set parameters & told to rely on it’s results.
I’ve seen this quite a few times with local authorities & Big business, 1 person is the designated tester but often has no actual experience just relies on the pass fail indication given & the results printed out.At least you got to the bottom of it in the end.

Hi Andy,
I was very impressed with the Knowledge and attitude of the site manager, who had gleaned much from his one day course at the local technical college.
He is a conscientious chap, doing his job correctly, unfortunately with incorrect kit.
Thanks once again ,
Mike

Well, the saga continues….
Got 2 new mains filter units and gave them to the electrician to test before fitting them to the machine and he failed them both although I had insulation tested them and found them >999Mohms. He is again, failing them on 3.9ma.
Does anyone have anything official, in writing, that says this test is not compulsory?

Hi garn
If you happen to come across this roadshow could you get some contact details, venue locations or even better a web address. I`m sure if people knew about it they would support it especially if it means free refreshments.

Interesting. There are a few “calibration days” mostly at electrical wholesalers’ premises. Most of the events though are “Money Talks – Megger shows how electricians can make more money” hosted at various golf clubs around the country. So that’s what it’s really all about. Wonder if Simon from Gosport has booked his place?
