KeymasterThanks Jim, these are cracking to get. I just don’t wanna be writing a lot until the new server is running.

Will you be able to accept video files as well? I know you have that cracker from Watchdog/Judy Benoit-Milner video in the downloads section. If video footage is possible on the new server, what formats are accepted? What file size?
I refer to relevant stuff of course including (possibly?) training videos?
I can even create iPod training videos…..oh yes! 8)
Thoughts please?

KeymasterYes there’s space for them but they do eat bandwidth up and there are limitations. 😕
File formats, whatever you like.
The available bandwidth (an incorrect term really) can soon be eaten up by big file transfers, but you can get around that by using the likes of U-Tube etc.

I did consider Utube but that is a free-for-all site for the most part. Using their private (email) invites to view videos does work but I’m not so sure. That’s why I ran tests with my Jungle Parrot video on You tube (If you recall….where you able to view that at all?)
Don’t know if you have checked out iPod but I must say that is one sun-of-a-gun compression format that is THE way forward and could well be the future?
Mpeg4 and all that good stuff 8)
So it’s LIGHTS – CAMERA – ACTION……….perhaps?
Who knows….? I will continue to figure out the best way of getting this stuff across to those that may need this potentially vital training aid!

Well, you see, it’s like this…
IPOD is a great device, but not a universal format. It also has limitations, especially in the detail due to the compression used for the likes of Podcasting. It needs to be compressed to keep the file size down just as you often see on the likes of U-Tube. And, IMHO, the screen is way too small for much of the things we do where it gets technical.
It has its place, sure, but I don’t think it’d be a lot of use for that TBH.
Apart from which you have to remember that the video IPOD is a relatively new device so there’s not too many about, loads of previous generation ones though, i.e. IPOD, Nano and IPOD Photo. The Nano cannot display video.
There is also a new IPOD just around the corner to blow away the new Zune player. It’s basically one big touchscreen with the click wheel becoming “virtual”.
So, in essence it’s not worth commiting the time to as it’s too unstable to commit to for the use.
Using U-Tube (or similar) you can actually embed the file run off their servers into a bit of HTML code and show the video on the original site, not having to re-direct to the host.
The other benefit of this is that it can be displayed on virtually any internet enabled device, so you open the doors to laptops, PDA’s, phones etc. as well.
The downside again though is file size vs speed and availability in the field.
So far the only format I’ve bothered with is REAL Player, which the ISE training is available on, but it’s a hell of a size even for just over 15 minutes with a decent resolution. But then I did film it in hi-def (1080i) in a 16:9 format for clarity.
And there’s the rub. With video (and photos to be fair to a lesser degree) you either have portability and low files sizes or you have high quality, sadly so far it’s a case of “never the twain shall meet”.

KeymasterMartin,
You can see an example of embeded You Tube video in the news on Connected Appliances.

The homepage demo on Connected Appliances shows this up very well indeed. All clever stuff with a great potential. 😉
What HTML code do you use to get it up and running Ken? (It’s not the usual img or url commands as I’ve tried and failed on that idea 😕 )
