“Will it come out?” says I,
    “No problem” he says.

So – drag it forwards, and WHOOSH! Dive over the machine – tap lever won’t move – jump back over, get screwdriver and pliers, finally stop water. Now soaked to the skin, water gone through socket, so power off. Phone Mrs P to bring set of dry clothes, she’s busy so annoyed. Customer can’t even brew a cup of tea……

All this for a pair of carbons. AND now – I’ve got a flipping cold.

I love this job, I really do. πŸ˜•

But to add to eastlmark’s comment the top prize in this area of machine design goes to Candy/Hoover. Without doubt a breakthrough in total incompetence for their continued insistence in those stupid plastic trims and the sliding mdf worktop. Which means the machine has to be dragged well beyond its own depth in order to simply take the lid off πŸ‘Ώ

But of course the word “slide” should be used very carefully, once the worktop has soaked up a load of spilt water and swelled “sliding” is not exactly the word i would have used. It seems Candy never learnt their lesson about this and I cannot believe they still do it that way. (I am sure Alex will continued this thread)

Isn’t it amazing how these threads drift, it’s great.

The old Candy lid system was a source of constant irritation to we poor suckers that had to fix them and yes, the wood swelling was a problem if it got wet. The only option was reverting to the best tool in the box, the hammer.

As for lifting a Candy tank out, I never found it a problem as after you’d done a few it was okay. Of course in those days you could afford to employ a trainee who could always go out and give you a hand with it, now you have to really have two bodies there at great expense to do such jobs. And yes, I know you can do them yourself but you are actually breeching EU H&S by lifting over 25Kg, therefore you cannot legally ask one employee to do the job as you’d be open to being sued. Nice eh, not many of us ever think on things like that.

You can put it on it’s back and slide it on a bit of wood though, but you still have to lift down and lift up the entire appliance so again you could actually still be in breach of H&S.

That should give you something to think about when setting the rates for such calls. πŸ˜‰

I am very happy that I have managed to entertain you all so royally (King Penguin joke, that).

Mrs P did indeed turn up with dry clothes. I needed the screwdriver to get the plastic tab off the stop tap, to get the pliers on and turn off the water.

You can’t become a Penguin, you have to be hatched that way.

AEG used to supply a beautiful brass Y piece with new appliances years ago – never managed to find it as a spare part though.

Trouble with all these daft things that the manufacturers do is that over time you gradually develop your “perfect” machine in your head. Now if we pooled all THAT combined knowledge and REALLY come up with the perfect machine, we could get paid a fortune by the manufacturers NOT to put it into production! πŸ˜†

    Anyway, We Are Greatly Amused.

    Cheers,
    Chris.

Chris would you be meaning “899645430709/2 y piece filling” not cheap but then again they don’t snap off either.
Its one thing I normally keep on my van along with w/m taps. Me and those plastic y pieces don’t get on had a few snap rather embarrassing to say the least.

    all the best

Arrh yes the good old plastic y piece, I had one of those beauties on a pair of commercial dishwashers, the hot water had a booster pump fitted with a flow switch and because the water in the pipe was 76c it ballooned and then burst in the middle of the night, oh what fun to wade around in water on boxing day 2003.
