ParticipantI am having a hard time trying to remove the screws but they are all buggered, no matter how I tried, used wd40 – no change, drilled out some but decided not to proceed as I do not want to make the hole bigger for the new screws to go in on the drum.
I can’t remember what I did last time, angle grinder seems to ring a bell but I recalled having difficulties due to the risk of cutting through on the rear of the drum.
I am going to attempt to use this… (I will have to go to the shop to buy this tool – less profit to be made knowing that I don’t do many drum bearings changes – knowing my luck, it probably doomed to fail!)

What other engineers have tried? Would love to know their tried and tested method.

I normally smack them with a drift a few times before trying to remove them. If they are stuck drill the heads off with either a 8mm or 10mm bit, normally once you get a fair way in the whole head just domes off cleanly.
No damage to innerdrum.
Do at least 3 of these a week this way.

Cheers, the screw heads are so soft and caked in limescale. Drift sounds like a plan but they are simply too soft.
Drill it is then…

Titanium drill, lasts ages and drills them out in no time at all, good idea to use drill cooling fluid at the same time. Don’t waste my time trying to unscrew them, just drill em out and fit new screws every time. The head comes off before the drill hits the drum and as they are virtually all fixed with only one screw per arm you can always use the other slot anyway.

Not this particular drum, all six screws are in. It’s WT761. Drilled out 4, 2 more to go. you are right about the drill bit, will buy some decent drill bits.
Thanks Jim

Make sure you use the drill on the slower sped setting as well. 😉

Will take note thanks. Too hot to work on the drum, will finish it off tomorrow. Customer wanted it finished for Friday.

DOH, I meant to say cobalt, I have a couple and they show no signs of wear at all.

I use the cobalt ones as well – these are the ones that I use – just add some cutting compound and they eat the bolts for breakfast, so far I have not damaged a single drum with them as they take the bolt head off first.
