    Stupid people are everywhere.

In order to prove that, have a look at one of last year’s Darwin Award winners, bearing in mind that in order to win one, you have to kill yourself in a completely idiotic and pointless manner…

    Darwin Winner

The cunning and ingenuity of stupid people never ceases to amaze me.

    And yet another clown.

Classic butchers both of them, 1st guy can’t solder to save his life either.
Now would’nt you like 1 of these lovely people to come fix your Gas boiler? 🙂

    oops.
Didnt want to upset you guys but these kind of DIYers scare the hell out of me, that guy came very close to killing himself. In fact I recon that shock would kill alot of people out there.

I know some of you guys have your livelihood rested on supplying spares via advice from this forum, personally I dont want to be indirectly responsible for someone doing something similar to what that idiot did on youtube.

I suppose you guys feel confident enough members of the general public are using the correct safety measures and tools when conducting the type of repairs you advice upon. Im not so sure personally.

Like alot of things it comes down to how your conscience. 🙂

Do you honestly think that these people would’nt tear their appliances apart whether we help them or not? They’d just look on youtube or one of the other idiot sites that are out there, get bad advice & no safety instructions. At least by getting advice from us, if they take the advice given they will be able to do things safely. As for making money by selling parts after giving advice, I know i don’t & I doubt if many of the others do either.
If the site management make money out of it, then good luck to them I imagine it takes a hell of a lot of time & money to run the site.

    Boselecta,

    Specialist01269 is completely correct.

There’s a myriad of sites out there that will hand out far, far more dangerous advice that we ever do. There’s even spare sites that traders on this site use as suppliers that offer video tutorials on how to mend appliances.

So, before you get on your high horse and slag off me or any of the others that are trying to promote independent engineers as helpful, courteous and friendly why don’t you go look round about you.

In short, what we do promotes the honesty and integrity of the independent repairers. As in, there’s no black magic, no huge trade secrets and we’re not trying to hold people to ransom. All we ask is that, if you need a repair doing or you need to buy a new machine that people at least consider us as we’ve demonstrated our openness and honesty.

Of course unless you take the view that we should tell nobody nothing and blackmail them into having a repair at whatever price we dictate?

And that makes us any better than many a manufacturer how exactly?

And that you feel that no-one has the right to DIY anything at all as, that’s basically what you allude to. In which case you better call up B&Q, Focus and a heap of others and tell them that because you think that painters and plumbers should be protected that they have to close up shop.

Just see how far you get with that.

you would be suprised how many capable people are repairing there own appliance –
some more qualified than ourselfs ..
ie degrees in electronics etc ..

but there are alot of stupid people as-well pitty they dont all video themselfs

got to admit that video was hillarios ..video looks- sounds american – they are a crazy breed and will generally try to repair things themselfs .

Yep it’s American as are most of the Dumb tech tips on there, the Gas appliance repair tips & Microwave repair tips have to be seen to be believed. Although they reckon they have strict rules regarding Electricity & Gas work, it does’nt look like it. Some of the people giving the advice are supposed to be proffesional engineers, Go Figure :rolls:

I thought it was a joke when i first heard about the darwins, as a concept i thought it was a very funny idea, but the fact it was actually taken from a concept to a real awards, and that is popular, just highlights how depraved society is that it has to get its kicks from others deaths, in such a vulgar way. In essence its no different to “happy slapping” – theres a fine line between that and laughing at someones misfortune, but the darwins cross it

so when have i ever slagged off anyone? If expressing my opinion that giving advice to the general public is potentially a very dangerous thing, then so be it.
I personally feel uncomfortable doing so for safety reasons, I know many of you do not feel the same way.

In fact I would go as far as saying I commend you for the time you spend on the public forums, would probably do so the same if I wasnt worried about the safety aspect.

Re: Safety first ?? nah, let’s film it !

Tone and not the first time that I’ve heard this kind of thing sorta raises the hackles.

If people choose to try to fix stuff themselves, so be it.

If they need help or pointers I’ve no issue giving advice within the framework and rules of the forum.

When they next need a bit of pro help they’re far more likely to remember the people that helped them and were honest than some that were not IMO.

But I’d far rather be giving and seeing advice given from professional people in the trade than see them getting advice from a plethora of sites just guessing at the problem.

And the rules are there for reason, they protect us as well as the public from harm. Be that from some idiot electrocuting themselves or from some form of legal challenge so there’s little reason (none I can think of in fact) for not offering advice to the public. That is unless you want to apply the manufacturer’s (some) mantra of, if they’re not trained by us then they’re not qualified to work on our appliances. Which is of course, complete Horlicks as a manufacturer trained engineer is no less qualified than an independent other than they are given all the technical information and a training course, usually denied to the independents.

Then we’re back to, many “public” are actually far, far more qualified than anyone in this old appliance repair business and perfectly able to self repair, probably a lot of them more so than a number that do it for a living.

But then, your opinion is what it is. Mine is what it is.
