Hi
Ok guys, I appreciate the inputs but I must enforce that this is a public forum and thus is inappropriate and unproffessional to advise modifying (however effective this maybe) this appliance.
It obviously has a fault which by the sounds of it helo has addressed more than once in this forum.
For future readers of this forum,be guided by the engineers on the site, they are time served and will know the correct repair for your appliance.Cheers
Greg

UPDATE:
The computer fan I installed in place of the original Samsung fan is still operating a treat. There’s no longer any water appearing in the base of the fridge and that implies the defrosting operation is working and ice is no longer building-up.
Unconventional fix, but fix nonetheless.

and still stupid and unnecessary
really people, pcs fans are for pcs’s not fridge freezers
and ill keep saying it , regardless of the nasty emails i got from certain people, these machines are easily repaired if your not too ‘smart’ to take the advice on offer
thanx

“and still stupid and unnecessary” That’ll dry up those nasty e-mails…
And, it’s his fridge/freezer, he’s not advocated working (live) with dangerous voltages, or anything else that strikes me as dangerous. Maybe not the optimum solution, but better for the environment than throwing it away and buying a new one. And if he’s satisfied with the solution, 😆 for him!
If the only advice given on this forum is “Call an engineer”, or “Throw it in a skip”, then this doesn’t seem to serve the keen amateur terribly well… :rolls:

Optimist? – You seem to be totally missing the point from Gegsy. The reality is that Mike can do exactly what he wishes and we have no control over his actions. If he wrecks his appliance the responsibility is ultimately his. However, we as a public forum have a duty of care to advise the safe and sensible procedure to protect both the appliance and more importantly the reader. It may well be that we suggest he gets an engineer in, it may well be we advise a direction of diy or we might try and save him grief by suggesting the skip. Whichever we are not trying to be unhelpful but we are trying to be safe. At the end of the day the choice is with you the reader.

I’d like to be constructive. My “fix” is exactly that – it has solved the one problem I have with the fridge unit (the freezer is fine). The cost was minimal and made use of a perfectly serviceable part that would othersise have languished on a shelf until being thrown.
There are NO dangerous voltages (as Optimist rightly pointed out). Helo_75 previously pointed out this model of fridge is auto-defrost and when the heater is operational the fan will continue to blow (warmed) air around the fridge. I don’t see this as a problem for US as perishable items rarely stay in the fridge for any length of time. Cans, bottles etc would be unaffected by a warmer air circulation for a short period of time.
The overall efficiency of the fridge with regard to being cool throughout has improved; this has permitted me to raise the required temp. to 3c from the original 2c. Food and drinks are not noticably warmer as a consequence.
My 30 year experience in i.t. leads me to believe the fan will continue to operate for some time yet. It’s operating environment is perfect in so far as the air is dry and the fan is constantly running. A true PC fan operates intermittently and often in dusty environments with heat differentials throughout the day/night.
Helo_75 (and others) – I acknowledge your expertise in your chosen profession but please don’t attempt to belittle my fix on the basis that it’s
“and still stupid and unnecessary”
and
really people, pcs fans are for pcs’s not fridge freezers
Consider……the original Samsung fan unit was changed after 23 months and then failed again after 8. Now tell me again……..is my fix that stupid?

ParticipantSpending a lot of my time working on equipment for which parts are no longer available, I’ll offer this view:
Whilst the part is likely acceptable for this application, the execution of the mod is more questionable. For all you’re aware, the supply to the original fan may have been suitable for your replacement; even if not, utilising the original cabling would have been a more sound proposition than leading wires under door seals etc…

Participantthis has to stop… NOW
ill say this once more
my immediate concern with your ‘fix’ was with the fact that youd snipped wires and left them there, also leaving trailing wires n stuffid be greatly concerned if ANYBODY who was reading your post whod had trouble (and, as uve all read, theres plenty of em) considered your solution as a viable alternative
and thats the point i , and others tried to make
just supposing someone inflicted a quite serious injury trying to implent the same repair?
who would be to blame?
it will always be a grey area, im not saying it didnt and wont work for you, im saying that we , as ‘competent’ engineers need to consider public safety at all times, regardless of whether the information is free or paid for
i know u think im a little sarcastic in my responses, i just feel that there will always be people who take that kind of advice and use it badlyso, i’m gonna stop there… it was never about me being more clever or smarter than anyone else…
believe me, ive seen a lot of very nasty accidents inflicted on people who disregarded basic safety, and that will always be part of the reasoning behind any advice i , or any othe engineer might offer
an engineer that cares? believe it or not, most of us do ! this site has been created by people who do care, and want to help people.. and the horror stories we’ve seen (and theres some well documented in the trade area) make us more and more safety conscious, and , at every turn, that will always be paramount
thanx.
