If your mainly in towns and know the place like a taxi driver then you probably wont need it. If, however, you need to find distant farmhouses in the midst of nowhere then you will be amazed how well the 7 didgit postcode features work. Customers look at me when i arrive in amazement that I didnt call to get directions, as if the mobile phone would even work in their area. (we all know how vague customers directions can be when they make the booking)
The moral is, if you get sat nav, make sure it has 7 figure postcode features as they dont work on house names.
I too had my cartogrophers boy scout badge and love maps and would never trust all to sat nav, but lets face it you cannot drive and use a map at the same time.January 31, 2007 at 11:18 am #202765squadman

Luckily down here in Devon sat nav snatching isn`t as rife as it is in other areas :rolls: . Now when we get to Southampton that is another story 😉

Sat nav thieving is a big problem in the Manchester area, it doesn’t matter if you remove the cradle as well, they look for the tell tale ring from the sucker on the screen, and smash their way in to find it. I get my A to Z out about once a day at the most so it would be a waste of money, that said, is there any other way to fix these devices apart from sticking them to the windscreen?

sat navs are falling in price rapidly, why??????
they work on the usa satellite system that has been around for years.
I think its later this year or early 2008 the european satellites will be fully operational.
these are so accurate they will even be able to tell you which lane you are in on a motorway.
the current system did not used to be so accurate but when we invaded IRAQ the 1st time the system was boosted to make it as accurate as possible for the cruise missilies etc.February 15, 2007 at 7:22 am #202773bobokines

I just stick mine to the dashboard with a self adhesive Velco pad.
It’s interesting how many errors there are on the sat navs; yesterday alone, it tried to send me the wrong way down a one way street, into a brick wall and there are several roads in my area that are missing from the maps or wrongly named.
There was a story in the local paper a few weeks ago where a [woman] driver ended up driving up the railway line on a level crossing! 😯

I bought my missus a new little black number at the weekend and it comes with a TomTom One Sat Nav thingy. On fiddling with it and following the voice prompts, I haven’t got lost once? 8)

I can’t see the point in sat/nav, we have wall to wall sea in the UK, drive to far in the wrong direction and you will just have to turn around 😆 or in your case Deltra, you have your back to the sea so you only need to go in the other direction 😆 😆
We usually get directions from the customers when they book a call, that with OS maps just about guarentees we hit the target, holiday homes can be a problem as the punters havn’t a clue where they are at once they get north of Watford 😆 😆July 12, 2007 at 3:06 pm #202777Martin

Almost a month now since I became the proud owner of a Tom Tom Sat Nav. I must say all the while it has been a constant source of wonder to me? 😕
I wonder why it tells me to turn up a single track road from off a main road when I’m going to turn left onto another main road in 500 yards time? I wonder why it misses major crossroads as if they weren’t there or takes a shortcut across a pub carpark instead of staying on the road ‘til the major junction dead ahead? 😯
In the setup menu you can specify either ‘shortest route’ or quickest route’. The shortest takes you up lanes, alleys, fords, farmers fields and the occasional pub carpark. The fastest route is no lover of carbon footprints and can take you easily 15 miles further? But apparently that’s quicker anyway? :rolls:
I’ve set it up for the ‘shortest route’ being as I have an ‘all terrain vehicle’ (Vauxhall Astra Van in fact! 😉 ) and am always up for a laugh. I have also set-up Ozzy Osborne as my co-pilot and we set off on every journey almost as if it was a voyage of discovery. Ozzy has some very choice phrases I must say, and I often have to apologise for his foul language when talking to customers on my hands free mobile. They often comment… ”I guess you have a Sat Nav in your van then?..“Quite right madam, sorry about that!”
I’ve even taken the habit of asking my customers for their POSTCODE? ….oh yes! So now I spend an extra 10 minutes between calls in my van wrestling with the touch-screen with my grubby, gnarled and arthritic fingers trying to get the coordinates to my next call? Ozzy sits back and then off we both go on yet another adventure into the unknown! 😈
Oh yes, isn’t technology amazing? To think, that there are 7 satellites out in deep space watching over me, every inch of the way. They send signals to Ozzy who sits inside a fag packet sized plastic box. He shouts directions to me across the void that is my dashboard. He even shouts louder when I drive faster. When I’m stuck in slow crawling traffic I swear Ozzy nods off you know? It’s only when I’m approaching yet another roundabout he wakes up and whispers his usual expletives as if to reassure me I’m on the right road all the while!
All clever stuff. In fact my daughter has built-in SatNav in her mobile phone. It’s rubbish compared to TomTom but at least technology is moving on a pace. By this time next year I guess we’ll all have SatNav’s in our mobile phone up-grades? Blimey!!! :rolls:

I couldn’t do without my SatNav – I’d get lost in a circle if I didn’t have it…
