Participantso ive gone on the sick
the stress and depression has finally got to me
so i went out today, try and cheer myself up and i get a card through the door from my so called manager, saying he called today and i must ring him to comply with ansense control procedures
i thought they werent supposed to hassle you while your off on the sick? or am i wrong?

Sorry to hear it bud, must have been a tough year.
Got that once while I was at Hotpoint…manager was as peed off as I was though.

Maybe a trip to the doctor and being diagnosed with stress and depression will put them straight.
Maybe a change of career is on the horizon?

Take it easy mate, remember its just a job, its not worth getting ill over, family and health come first, everything else is irrelevant.
Iv always thought a manager going to your home was harassment, HP do it as well. It never happened to me but TBH unless it was pre arranged I’d refuse the meeting and request a formal notification of why the meeting is required. in fact I would meet them out and not in my house.
It’s a piss take, id call them and request if a meeting is required have it on neutral ground with a 3rd person present perhaps another engineer or union rep to make sure everything is witnessed.

Just because you didn’t answer does not mean you were not in, just too unwell to answer to anybody.
I have to say its a piss take calling to your property.
There seems to be a lot of unhappy people I speak to that work for brands and are fed up with the hassle since 2007, one thing is supporting a business through a crisis another is them abusing already worried workers.
One guy I spoke to is fed up with the hours, his contract states his daily working hours is 8hr a day. The bosses have them doing 9 hrs with no break, so there away from home min 10.5 hours plus any unpaid overtime due to calls being delayed, and there route mileage and call loading has increased by 2 extra calls a day and miles from 150 a day average to 350 miles, 4 extra post codes. There filling fuel has gone up, yet there completion rates and bonus has dropped.
Work that out Mr Dumbass Service Manager.
Case of kick the donkey it’ll kick you back. :rotfl:
I just wish one day people would realize employers are using people and wake up to the fact there just rats working to enrich the people at the very top.
Even billionaire bosses with amazing PR and a over active Twitter account promoting there charity work will make good employees jobless in a blink of an eye without remorse.
Hopefully post crisis engineers will leave these fools without coverage, but I fear there will always be an idiot willing to step into the lions mouth with the assumption he wont get bit.

I hate to say it Lee but, you’re wrong.
There are a lot of employers out there that want to work and do work quite happily with their employees.
Measures like calling at the employees home is a recognised thing to be doing when the reason for illness is serious or the employer has suspicions about the legitimacy of the reason for absence.
Once again, there are a lot more bad employees that take the Mickey with days off and whatnot than there are bad employers. And, almost unfailingly, if the employer does not follow the correct procedures over absence then they will find themselves open to a claim of some sort.
It is very often the case that one idiot employee sets policy for all others, often ruining a good deal for all.
It may well be that Helo’s illness is completely legit and above board but the employer has to follow the legislation and company policies applying them fairly and equally to all. So if this is the system, this is the system they can’t deviate from it or they open themselves up to a claim.
It’s also not true that all company bosses are sitting rolling in money and, I’m somewhat surprised that you carte blanche apply such a simplistic and, bluntly, dumbass view that usually only the poorly educated idiots take.

i didnt mean to start an angry debate, but on the whole, ken is bang on the money
in my 11 years with comet, i had , around 3 days off on the sick, its just not me
i feel worse by doing it, and ive never felt like this at any point of my life
having worked closely with the management at comet over the years, i kinda got a feel for the ins and outs of whats required to keep the business profitable
for a lot of businesses, big or small, the difference between success and failure is a very fine line.. paying someone whos takin the michael, and wants paying for not working when its quite possible, simply costs a LOT of money, in lost revenue and costs
but for me, it wasnt planned, i went for routine check-up and the doctor jumped all over me and gave me a sick note
ill do the right thing of course, its just a matter of timing for me

Having recently been off for a while with a virus thing after very, very few sick days in 20+ years, I can sympathise Helo. So, no need to apologise at all.
The problem is of course that even genuine cases get looked on with suspicion because of all the ones that are a bit iffy will we say. Add to that GP’s seeming willingness to declare someone has “depression”, “stress” or whatever and sign them off on happy pills for little to no good reason other than, as far as I see at times, they don’t like getting up and going to work and you can understand why employers get a bit antcy about it.
I’m not for a moment saying that there isn’t just reason in some cases to do so I do however question how common it has become and, socially acceptable. As in, is it GP’s being a little over cautious or trying to simply clear the books without referral to a specialist in the area?
For an employer, regardless of any personal opinion , it only means one of two things really, you either have someone that could potentially be unstable in some manner or, that is liable to be off on a long term illness ticket. Neither are attractive propositions to any employer so it’s only natural that they will try to mitigate any effect as much as possible. It isn’t personal although I can completely understand that it could look and feel that way at times. Normally it’s just policy in how such things are dealt with.
The big thing with things like this is though, it’s largely unquantifiable.
Not even slightly helped normally by the GP’s usual very vague diagnosis that an employer gets and little to no information on when the employee will be fit for duty, if ever.
So for the employer the question becomes, what the hell do we do with this?
If I’d been working for someone with the thing I had I’m sure it’d have been looked at that way and, because I know what I know, quite rightly too. And, I’m just as sure that a lot of people would think I was taking the proverbial.

Hmmm So employers can break the rules, place undue stress, threats and then complain that the employees either call sick with stress or take the piss.
I agree there are bad employees, i’ve worked with many, but in my yrs of experience bad employees are usually employed by bad employers.
The reason I left employment for self employment was due to a work ethic of “I work to live not live to work”.
I guess I may have an uneducated view, but I believe employees bring value and are paid that value, it does not suit me providing a company with far more value than I’m getting.
Which is why I currently work the hours that suit me for far more money than an employer pays.
Maybe that’s the big issue with the current world, too many people working to much for too little, only to provide riches for the owners/directors.
After all employees simply want a fair pay for a fair days works, or they’ll simply leave and go elsewhere. Due to current crisis employees are limited in this option, so many either crack or choose not to be walked on so take stupid measures.
I don’t believe I’m wrong, just honest. 😉
One guy I heard of worked for a large brand and the only reason he stayed and put up with the hours was because the brand was soo bad at stock control and there components fitted many other brands he was making far more from fiddles than he would if he left. Of course he got wind they knew and before they called him in he left.
Think about it. Maybe wrong, but if you keep poking the dog it will bite back one day :rolls:

Sorry to hear the news mate, All your old work mates at Comet know how dedicated and hard working you are so I know your not pulling a fast one. Heard some really bad reports about your company during the last couple of months. I can put you in touch with a guy who is possibly looking for an experienced white goods engineer in your area mate. He offered me the service managers job before I started with my present company and was after a guy with refrigeration and gas who knows his stuff. He actually uses this site and is friends with KWATT and myself on LINKDIN
