Success! Looks like it was indeed the heat/circulation pump causing the problem – it was heating and pumping ok but for resasons unknown something connected with it was stopping the water inlet from triggering. Don’t think it was a blockage, more an electrical issue. Anyway it has been replaced and – so far – has worked perfectly every time. A word of praise here for Siemens customer service who were very helpful. Also many thanks to Martin for his guidance and all who made suggestions, I’m very grateful.

Massive thanks to the OP and other participants in this thread.

Had exactly the same problem with a Bosch dishwasher and the same workaround applied (opening and closing the door). Had to call an engineer in the end who had once blamed my pipework (and cost me four hours of sorting stuff). Second time round engineer felt it was the drain pump. Replaced it (and yes, it was a lot quieter) but still no dice.

Using this thread I was able to direct him towards the circulation pump. And sure enough, it was duff. Replaced and everything working great again – much stronger pressure within dishwasher too so everything’s turning out clean again.

    Thanks again. God bless t’internet.

“If it starts when you tap it, you may have a sticky relay on a pcb.”

Just wondering if this was the cause? I have exactly the same problem and it works if I open the door during the filling stage. Is it something easily fixed?

    Cheers
