I would say the unit is unsafe to use without the fan running. it could be the fan unit or the stat or controller that operates it

with it being a gas appliance you would probably be breaking the law if you repaired it but its up to you

don’t know but I still think its a treading on ice moment. I am sure one of the gas boys will step in and clarify but as far as I know you should not do it. I even think it may be illegal if you disconnect the customers gas pipe which is mad as they are designed to be disconnected by the owner

one of the problems is if you attend a gas appliance you are supposed to check the whole gas system for faults. if you repair the cooker and a week later a gas leak causes an explosion which may be in the boiler then questions would be asked as to who last repaired a gas appliance in the premises. Although you are not responsible for the leak if the customer had had a gas safe engineer out the explosion would not have happened

you can see where I am coming from and yes I have fitted non gas part to a gas cookers but there are risks to this and you must be aware of them

in theory he is disconnecting a gas pipe so in my limited knowledge I don’t think its allowed mad isn’t it

the crazy thing is I have found dangerous gas mistakes made by so called gas safe engineers. The whole system is a mess. There needs to be a way of working on the electrics of a gas cooker as long as you don’t disconnect gas parts without being screwed for very expensive licences. lets face it Gas safe is a monopoly or a legal cartel

yeh jobs for the boys mate a con .. although i do agree . replacing gas parts and joints you should be qualified . its a piece o cake to .. all you need is a pressure gage and a bit rubber hose . gas guys still use them .

Having used to do gas under the original CITB system, if you worked on an appliance that had any gas element to it you had to do a soundness test regardless of what you did.
I think the disconnecting of the gas pipe by flooring guys may be slightly different as they aren’t repairing that appliance professionally.
Any appliance that has a gas element to it we don’t touch regardless of what the fault may be.

If you disconnect a bayonet fitting it’s fine, those are intended to be disconnected by consumers so they can pull stuff out and clean.

Beyond that, on dual fuel, it’s a well grey are, discussed many times including by the WTA with Gas Safe and the HSE and no clear guidance has been forthcoming. Basically, nobody wants to put their head on the block.

So long as you do not break or interrupt a gas supply or carrying part then, technically, you should be okay. But it’s not a dead cert.

Just to clear this up the homeowner or responsible person can legally disconnect and re connect a gas cooker that is on a baynoet fitting taking into account that it has been fitted in the 1st instance by a gas safe engineer as regards to working on this appliance you can do the electrical side ie element switches cooling fans Tec but not thermocouples or any thing relating to the gas side if you don’t feel happy working on it don’t do it. As Dave has said either toc that controls the fan or cooling fan itself hope this clears things up as I’ve just renewed my gas safe and asked main similar questions.kai
