I have found this very interesting reading… especially since I have never done and ELI test and wouldn’t know how to. 😳
I use a socket tester just to make sure that the appliance is going to be earthed once fitted. I have only started using a Megger in the past year and I wouldn’t profess to knowing the full usage level of that. :rolls:
The lack of information relative to correct testing for varying applications is unbeleivable considering the amount of concerned government departments out there. (Not getting at cigarette smokers, this is just as a point) Goverment departments prefer to spend money on counter-cigarette advertising for those that choose to harm themselves by smoking, rather than to provide decent training or information to a trade that can give somebody a free safety service to complement the service that we are actually paid for. 😕
Getting the equipment to do these tests is not the problem, secondhand callibrated units are about £50 – £100 for a decent Robin, but finding out how to use them properly is not so easy.
I’m an electrican he anounced, your just an washing machine repairer and I should stop frightening customers.
You may have seen the issue I had last week about the lack of earth to an appliance socket… This led to a similar situation when I reported it to the electrical department of the Housing Trust involved.. The head electrician got on his high horse when I asked when the tests were last done on the property. He told me that in summer last year there was a percentage test done. I told him why I was asking and he immediately started asking what equipment I was using, as if that made any difference; (a missing earth is a missing earth). The electricain wanted proof and qualifications, so I told him that I had no electrical qualifications and he got very snotty, so I then told him I had photos to email him of the socket-test and of the missing wire, to which he laughed… He soon stopped laughing when I asked for his email address to send him a copy of what I had sent to HSE. 😈
This is the reason I think for the large amount of interest in the thread that kwatt had running about the training. I think there are an awful lot of us (a lot more than are owning up) that don’t know enough and would like to learn.March 15, 2011 at 10:23 pm #233658maltheviking

Anyway, this village got converted to underground electric supply in 2006, so would I be right in assuming her house would now be a TN (PME) system?Could be, but difficult to identify if your not used to it, not a good idea to assume anything
😉

Can we simplify this how do we test freestanding appliances and what with. Also how do we test built in appliances and what with.

If you want a good book on Electrical systems including the EFLI values for different systems & how to test, take a look at The Electricians Guide to BS7671 & Part P by John Whitfield. It explains things in plain English & is an invaluable reference to keep in the van.
The book is available from most Electrical Wholesalers & well worth the money.March 18, 2011 at 9:33 am #233663maltheviking
