I saw Asda selling under-counter fridges for £60 😯
“Gettem before we have to offer retailer takeback!”
All the cheap crap doesn’t bother me. The smart people will know that it’s cheap crap, and the dumb people will find out the hard way!
Either way, people come to us and ask for a quality appliance 😀
“I don’t want to go to c***y’s or c***t, they just sell cheap crap!”

That’s okay helo.
All you do is, like GB, just don’t sell the rubbish stuff. If people want to buy rubbish then let them go to Currys or Comet and maybe, just maybe, in time they’ll see the errors of their ways.
Plus, anything remotely decent the indies can compete on rather well thanks very much. 😉

Ken,
I’m sure people don’t ‘want to buy rubbish’ as you so lovingly put it.
As you’re well aware, there are many differing financial constraints on people and some, who may not learned enough to know better, are over the moon that they can afford a brand new machine.I think I understand what you’re getting at however it does smack a bit of ‘I’m alright Jack’.
I believe it’s not the consumer (in this case) who should bear the brunt of your wrath/frustration but the greedy super-retailers who have no thought of good customer relations and are quite happy to inflict further debt upon the already less well off.
🙂
All the best.

I fully appreciate that some people are on a budget and can’t afford to buy a decent machine but, sadly, IME these are very often the very people that should have a decent machine. I’ve had people on the phone in tears as they are still “paying up” for a Servis and the thing’s junked due to failure. Big retailer’s attitude to the problem… “well you should have bought the warranty as well then”, very helpful.
Same thing happened with Philco years back.
In short, it’s a moral standpoint on my part. I’d rather not sell something that I consider to be sub-standard or not up to the job that it is intended for than make a quick buck. If people can’t afford what they need then I am not the one to tell them how they get around that problem as that is their own affair. All I can do is offered as balanced an opinion as I can given the information that I have. If people don’t like that or choose to ignore the advice then that is their own choice, not mine.
However none of the above negates the fact that I will not, wherever possible, sell or service sub-standard products or, at least what I consider to be that. I would rather not have the business as to my mind that is not acceptable.
If others wish to cater to that market then so be it.
The incident/s of people in tears, let down and frustrated was one of the key reasons that I dropped servicing Servis branded products for GBDAR even although it was to my business’s detriment at the time.
Like I said, it’s a moral stance on my part.
As for the super retailers, by that you mean Currys, comet, Argos and the rest of the merry band, well they’d sell their granny to make a quick buck and if people get poor products or service whilst they do that then they just don’t care. As for their finance products, IMO, it’s tantamount to legalised loan sharks.

It’s amazing the amount of people who insist on buying the cheap rubbish, yet have a TV worth £1k, or a new car on the drive.

Surely as a retailer you have to have a balance of products to suit all ages, budgets and styles otherwise you are going to be type cast. We stock the Merloni rangeof appliances, so we have the dreaded indesit machines, while they are not the sharpest knife in the drawer they do serve a purpose for our customers who do not have the budget available for something better. The we have the normal Hotpoint machines which we do sell a lot of probably due to the large range of product they have available.
Then our largest growing sector supplier which is Bosch, not only has this increased our ticket price which in turn increases profitability. But we are now able to supply our customers with a quality product with a good guarantee and backup at a resonable price.
Then we have Miele (sorry K 😉 ). This brand is relatively new to us as a retailer and after a slow start we are now placing regular orders for the base to mid priced products. Which again has increased our price per box and our reputation for supplying quality appliances.
In a nutshell we can supply a washing machine to suit every type of customer and budget from £199 to £1099.
We won`t turn anyone away if they want to part with their hard earned cash. After all business is business.

Yeah I know Don, I just gave up on the cheap stuff TBH. I found it often created more hassle than it was worth as people expected an Indesit/Servis/Haier or whatever to perform (and last) like a Miele. 😕
We used to have it on the floor but I really put people off it and only used it to sell up from.

There’s a growing number of people who want to be seen to be looking good. Spend all their money on cars , holidays , clothes , kids toys etc. and a lot of these people sacrifice on quality and price when it comes to things their “rivals” don’t see , like appliances.
What they don’t realise , and we have to educate them on , is that buying cheap these days really is a false economy and we should keep on telling them this and you never know one day we might get through.
If we could make them look foolish or inferior for having low cost appliances , rather than boasting as to how cheap they managed to get a new dishwasher for , that would be the answer but how to swing that in our favour is a difficult one.

I`d rather sell loads of Bosch than some of the tosh that is currently being offered elsewhere 😉 .
It`s all about re-educating customers. Trouble is nowadays is that their expectations are much higher than ever before. All I try to do is sell the idea of trading up in price and then tell them the benefits in doing so ie less energy, less resources and the longer the appliance stays in the home the less the impact on recycling. Not only that but it`s good for us too as a retailer.
Happy customer = happy retailer 😀

That’s the whole reason i use it for.
But, there’s people that just can’t be switched and are stuck in their ways.
For someone who’s using a machine once or twice a week, something at a couple of hundred quid is ideal.
We’ve not sold a single Haier yet, the build quality puts the customer straight off.
