Re: Test Gear & Safety testing

From what I have been able to find out the original standard that covered this was BS3456: Safety of household & similar appliances: If an appliance has been repaired it is an essential requirement that Earth Bond & Insulation tests are carried out to ensure continued Electrical safety.
I believe this has now been replaced by BS EN 60335.
Unfortunately this is split into many parts & quite expensive so I don’t intend to buy it just to prove the point.
    Andy.

    3) They are actually breaking the Law by not testing on completion of a repair.

Really?I must admit that’s news to me 😕 . Are you absolutely sure of your fact on this one?

Yes Presser The law says You have To Do the |Safety test And Record The Results And Stamp The Appliance Whether You Do Any Work On it Even If It Fails The Visual test. And In Extreme Cases Cut The |Appliance Lead Off. Class 1 or 2.

The Last Update I had Was Last may.

In today’s Climate Id Rather Do the Test For The |Sake Of 5 min.
Record The results If anything You Worked on decided to go Live 7 Weeks Down The Road After You Been There
If They Made A Claim Against You You Wouldn’t Have A Leg To Stand On If You Haven’t Got The Correct Results Documented
And Your Insurance Will not Cover You 😥 some people got none 😡
And If Your A home Owner The Lawyers Are Going To go for It 😥

Re: Test Gear & Safety testing

I think many are getting a little carried away regarding the law and regulations regarding safety testing. The confusion seems to revolve around the regulations regarding licensed PAT testing and electrical installation work licensed through Part P regulations. Non of which relate to fixing and testing appliances in a customers home.

‘Health & Safety At Work Act 1999’ does have some relevance when dealing with repairs and safety tests on commercial equipment in the workplace but in the domestic environment no such regulations apply.

We’re just not regulated in this trade and therefore you don’t even need a neon electrical screwdriver.:?

You Are Correct About The domestic Side of The Industry Martin.
But The local trading Standards Are Asking For testing & Result Down This Way know Which Suits .

there’s A Guy Round This Way who Doesn’t Even Carry A Test Screwdriver But he Is On A better rate Than Myself The Sooner Id And Some Form Of Regulation Comes In The better

Re: Test Gear & Safety testing

O.K people: My last post on this subject, I have today been in contact with the Trading standards people regarding this & been told that it comes under the Electrical equipment safety regulations 1994 & is enforceable under LAW, whether that is accurate or not I can’t say what I can say is from several enquiries I get the same answer. Whether anyone else decides to take notice is not my problem I for 1 do not intend to stop safety testing on completion of repairs on the off chance that it may not be a legal requirement.
1 last point: I don’t quite understand why any Competent & Conscientious
engineer would not carry out Electrical safety testing on completion of a repair be it a Legal requirement or not. 😕
As for commercial equipment repairs I don’t believe these were mentioned, a Commercial repair engineer is an engineer who carries out repairs for Profit or Reward.

    Hi all,

If anyone wants to purchase a Megger or Earth loop tester contact Andy Willey at AW Services, they have some second hand ones from the MFI Extracare Engineers available, out of calibration certificate but Andy can get that done for you, quoted me £50 + vat for each meter plus £30 + vat to calibrate each ones, as you know these meters are very expensive new so its good oppertunity to get legal at a reasonable price.

Bought one a couple of week ago and found it to be a good bit of kit. Its a AVO BM403/2 and at £50 a real bargain if you compare the price of a new one.

    In my arsenal if have
    1 x Robin ELI tester
    2 x Robin Meggers
    2 x Metrohm Meggers
    1 x Robin Multimeter
Ok so I like meggers 😆 and Robin
As for the argument of why do we need a ELI tester, then my opinion
is it is pointless making sure an appliance is safe if an earth fault has no where to go, ELI test confirms a good earth on the supply.

Couple of questions you may all want to comment on is ” what testing should be done if the appliance is hard wired i.e through a connection unit instead of a 13a socket” This includes cookers which are also usually hard wired.

Built in appliances, with the connection point behind it, and you find it is a major job to remove said appliance although you don’t have to because you can do the repair insitu, test or no test?
