KeymasterTo allow the spin to wind down, water to drain and all that malarky. Safety basically in case some youngster opens the door before all is made safe.

Most door locks work on a “bimetallic strip” or a “PTC” principle. Activation involves heat – at the end of the wash, you have to wait for it to cool down again.

ParticipantRe: The Delay
its far cheaper to fit a machine with a heat activated door lock than one connected to the motor & water levels for safety systems, so the choice is would you pay an extra £50 fo a machine with these systems on just so you dont have to wait 1-2 mins for the door to release at the end of a programme??

May be a pain in the butt, some years back a washing machine company had a problem with interlocks and a small boy managed to open the door when it was spinning and had his arm almost twisted off and that is why they use a time delay.

I can understand them needing to be locked when the machine is in use but as soon as that program finishes I see no need for the delay at all. If anything should have a lock its a tumble dryer. Its Just one of those things that drive the population barmy at times.

Hi
It has been said its down to cost.
If you want a machine that unlocks as soon as drum has stopped turning, then you will be looking at some of the top end Miele range where cost isnt an issue 😀Greg

ParticipantDunno, some of the mid-range Zanussi and AEG stuff has a thermal lock with a solenoid override.
Machine faults or power goes off, you have to wait for the cooldown; but end or reset a cycle and the solenoid overrrides the heater and unlocks immediately.
Makes a nice satisfying click too…April 15, 2007 at 6:46 pm #210692gegsy

No, sorry, you can’t post that in a public forum. Safety implications.
