madrat wrote:You can also clean the machine by running it empty with a glassfull of distilled (white) vinegar in the upper rack. At the end of the wash programme it will be left full of water. Examine the remaining water, if there are gritty particales in it the filters or spray arms may be blocked. Check both and run repeated cycles with vinegar to help shift limescale deposits from the water jets, until the remaining water is clear.

And vinegar kills bacteria how exactly?

Sorry Madrat but this is plain wrong in large part. The cause of a build up of odours is the growth of bacteria within the appliance and acid in a very mild solution, which you’d end up with using this advice, will not kill off the bacteria effectively. It will make the inside shine and seem clean and it will smell like a chip shop, but it won’t solve the underlying issue. Most bacteria are tough little critters and you’d kill off some, but not enough to stop the problem from coming back pretty sharpish.

Acid will combat limescale to a degree, but that’s not the issue here and to reach the point where it would be effective an acid would have to be of such concentration that other damage could be caused to the appliance.

Re: Tricity Bendix – Smelly Plates problem

    Hi. πŸ™‚

All I will say on this is that those who know what they are talking about know what they are talking about! I do not mean that in a patronising way at all, and I do not doubt the some alternative/traditional cleaning methods may work for some.

The main point here is that engineers often see what happens to appliances once the damage has been done or problems have set in. I am not an engineer, and the closest I have come to this is always speaking to visiting engineers (who I have always enjoyed talking to), or the times when my Dad was capable of replacing the brushes in our Hotpoint Microtronic L.E. washing machine, or the new pump in the Bosch washing machine.

The fact is that with a lot of electrical products these days – and I am also talking about consumer electronics and computers because my experience in more centred on those – is that many people simply do not know how to look after them. I do not mean to take a paternal attitude of β€œWell, if you do not understand this product 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}, you cannot have it”, but I do wish there was more education about how to properly choose, use, maintain and service appliances of any kind.

We have purchased our first Miele washing machine because we have had enough of the dire appliances from other manufacturers (excluding Bosch, Siemens, Zanussi and Whirlpool), and we want quality – quality that we were used to and could get from Hotpoint in the 1980s and much of the 1990s.

I could take this on further to exactly how children should eat the right food at school and at home Γ  la Jamie Oliver, but that’s for another forum! πŸ˜‰ There are allsorts of issues in life where good professionals really do know what is best in their particular field, but many chose to ignore such advice.

Anyway, I am not ranting or attacking anyone. This is a professional but friendly forum that imparts sound advice, and I am grateful for the advice.

    Regards,

    Carl

All I can say is I and people I know use the vinager method and dont have smelly dish washers. It works for me costs next to nothing and is none poluting. I shall continue to use it in the dishwasher, washing machine, kettle, coffee maker, and shower. You should also see the muck it brings out of the caravan water system 😯

You still don’t get it madrat do you? You persist in proliferating your misguided advice wrongly perceived from Kim & Aggie publications! Do please accept for once and for all that white wine vinegar is used extensively by the likes of Kim & Aggie in clearing limescale – nothing more than that. πŸ˜‰

Indeed you will do well placing it in your kettle and coffee maker(although I wouldn’t come to your house for a cup of tea :rolls: ) Or pop the shower head in a bucket of the stuff. But you must not put it in your washing machine or dishwasher. I underlined the important word so that the many that read this will heed my advice.

Going back to the “smelly plates” issue if I may, only a good proprietry brand such as ‘Fairy Active Bursts’ tablets is the complete one application daily solution. Coupled with ensuring the filters are cleaned regularly and that the bottom door seal and tub seal are wiped often. Also pay close attention to the door edges, whenever the top basket is loaded, coffee and tea is spilled onto the door edges and hinges can, if not wiped up regularly, can cause an awful stink! 😯

Keep your stinking white wine vinegar well away please? 8)

Re: Tricity Bendix – Smelly Plates problem

After reading the hot debate on vinegar I would just like to add that my smelly dishwasher problem has only really come about since I started using Kim and Aggie’s vinegar method 😳 I thought there must be an underlying problem but the vinegar has just been masking the problem all along.

Just wanted to thank the professionals on this board for their useful and helpful advice, hopefully my machine now has a new lease of life πŸ˜€

I’d like to thank Martin as well!

Why? Because Delta68 is my wife and we were just about at our wits end with this dishwasher and ready to buy a new one.

We bought the dishwasher off a friend some years back who was only selling it because she wanted a built-in jobby and consequently didn’t come with an instruction manual.

Re: Tricity Bendix – Smelly Plates problem

This is all very interesting, since my previous dishwasher (Hoover) stated in the manual to pour a glass of white vinegar into the machine and run a hot programme.

And as for not placing strong acids into dishwashers – guess again!

Finish dishwasher cleaner happens to contain CITRIC acid and SULPHAMIC acid.

To get rid of smells in a dishwasher or washing machine, you could try running the machines empty a few times, with the old CHLORINE-based dishwasher powders (on sale in Cash & Carry’s, and ‘Farm-supply shops’).

Oh! oh! I hope madrat doesn’t read this? :rolls:

Just when we thought we had finally laid this thread to rest? πŸ˜‰

Trilobite wrote:Finish dishwasher cleaner happens to contain CITRIC acid

Citric acid is a benign cleaning agent.

    Trilobite wrote:and SULPHAMIC acid.

Sulfamic acid is an acidic cleaning agent for ceramics and metals and used in minute quantities per application to dissolve quickly in water.
