KeymasterHey John at least you escaped the recount of the Battle Of Waterloo or summat at the Xmas Bash, we was sat listening to old sailors “war” stories. Although after a few drinks they were pretty entertaining but I do believe that there may have been a price to pay with the wives. 😆

So it’s late, nothing new there for me. Some of us work for a living you know! 😆
UKW4 will have a presentation by Proctor & Gamble on their products and some of the analysis of studies caried out on our industry, specifically independent repairers. I’ve had a preview of some of this stuff and trust me, it is incredibly interesting as well as directly related to what we do for a living. If nothing else it should be worth attending for this presentation alone.
For those of you that are not aware of who Proctor & Gamble are, they manufacture Ariel, Daz, Bold, Fairy, Fairy dishwasher products as well a whole heap of other stuff. Loads of product that relates to our little industry.
As yet to be confirmed there will also be a presentation by one of the companies leading the charge in the UK with regard to the WEEE Directive as well, more on that to follow. They will explain all about it and the implications of the directive.
If anyone knows anyone that can help us on the Part P issue then please let me know.
This promises to be the most informative meeting to date.

KeymasterWe shall also now have a representative from Valpak there to talk us through the implications of the WEEE Directive to us on our businesses too. Should be quite an interesting natter that one. 😉

KeymasterYou read all that then?
Anyway, Valpak are involved in the actual legislative process as it all unfolds as it’s not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} done yet I don’t think.

To be honest, even as a retailer I’m not completely 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} on all the legislation regarding WEEE, and yes I know i should be.
Busy times and all that 😉
A very interesting addition to the meeting IMO, I for one will have a few questions should the guy from Valpak not have already answered them for me in his presentation.

:rotfl: Sad to admit I have :rotfl:
13 August 2005 is the next staging post apparently 🙁 Overall the way I read it though is that the cost to ‘dispose’ of this ‘enviromental waste’ and the legislation the EU will implement, is minimal in relation to manufacturing profits.
Therefore it will have little impact on the hopes we have in manufacturing price rises taking place 🙁 In fact IMHO, as they get wiser to the legislation being placed upon them, they will produce even cheaper junk 😥

KeymasterThat’s actually a pretty unrealistic view in all honesty Martin and a little naive on the part of the EU. Never mind, maybe they’ll learn one day eh?
If they stick a £10 cooling fan on an oven the price in store will rise by up to £50 by the time it filters through all the channels, so just think on the effet that £30-50 to dispose at “end of life” will cost. And there’s plenty agencies out there now just waiting to cash in on it too.

Taken to its logical conclusion, we are hopefully going to see appliance costs rise significantly. There are more pros than cons to this.
Rises in material costs are starting to bite. This will raise manufacturing costs – hopefully the “x5” factor Ken has suggested will apply. The bad news bit is that the material cost factor is not the major cost in production – the human one is (hence the rise of production in minor EU countries and other parts of the world). No doubt this exploitation will allay some of the increases.
The “WEEE factor” will be factored in, and no doubt will be exploited by major retailers as a way of bumping prices.
The good bit (if it all comes together) will be the public paying noticably more for their appliances. I would be prepared to bet that a significant proportion of the buying publics perception of the value of their appliance will change to one of “added value”. Indeed, the idea of paying to throw it away will certainly impact on older people who expect their machines to have a reasonable service life.
No doubt the disposal costs will be forgotten as being part of the purchase cost and be retained as a memory – “It will cost to get rid of this”.
I see no reason to disabuse the public of this notion – we are Repairers after all!
It may well encourage the Public to have machines repaired as opposed to buying new ones, especially if they think the Government, or (even better) Europe are going to get their money!
Think about this, develop a position, let’s try and make some money!

Hi Dave
Any chance of booking me a room for the Friday and Saturday. The meeting sounds very interesting from what I have heard, plus I need to get away from the missus and kids. They are worse than my customers at the moment!
Much appre’Andy G
