ParticipantLooking at the email correspondencs with cafepress, they seem to make to order then ship. I suppose in the UK we’d have to bulk order stock and expect someone to hold it for us – this requires capital investment, and we seem to be a bit light on that front.
Still, Mrs P bought a $200 motherboard recently for some computer she’s making and didn’t pay a penny in duty, as it was a “spare part”.
Funny old world…………

KeymasterYes Penguin, you are absolutely correct in that Caffepress manufacture as and when required then ship once the order is made up.
The problem is that there is no UK (or EU) equivelent of Cafepress and to get the same kind of pricing as we have you’d be looking at ordering substantial quantities and holding stocks. Quite why no UK company has implimented such a scheme is beyond me, but that’s the way it is.
Added to which to get the prices offered by Cafepress we’d be looking at buying big quantities in the UK to compete. So, even allowing for the import duty, it’s still cheaper than a UK source which is sad I know, but the reality of the situation. There again, if I’d sourced it in the UK VAT etc would all have been added at source without the option of escaping in when the PO cocks it up. 😉

Well my Genuine UK Whitegoods Mug whilst a little costly does a great job, my tea keeps warm for quite a while and it washes nicely in the dishwasher. Can’t say fairer than that after all.
Incidentally it was shipped to me via Germany I believe, took about 8 days from ordering to arrival.
Cheers!

I suppose I’ll have to stop drinking beer straight from the can now 😉

ParticipantNice mug – did you tell them to ship it as a spare part or did you have to pay duty on it?
There has to be a way round this!

No, I paid duty, which is the reason I only just got it. It’s been stuck in the main PO here for a couple of weeks as they wouldn’t deliver without payment 1st and I haven’t had time to collect it until yesterday.

KeymasterI didn’t get stung on my order but it would seem that, from previously many items order from the US or Canada, if you get a muppet postman you’ve cracked it. Apparently my sources in the PO tell me that due to the fact that they now employ part-timers that are barely litterate they are poorly trained and simply don’t know what to charge or when to charge it. The kinda bad bit is that the PO picks up the tab as they have to stump up to HMG at Mount Pleasant sorting in London.
Just as I understand it.
