    I don’t think anyone is trying to say that “all” heaters will go back in ..That is a big statement to say as any one removing said heater will look at the overall condition and make that call..I have probably not done as many heaters as you or Martin but the ones i have refitted were still in good shape so less expense for the customer .If there was a doubt regarding the heater it would be replaced without a doubt.But i would not just replace the heater with a new one just because it was removed and a little fiddly to put back in.

    Only ever changed the heater if the rubber grommet is perished, all others fit in nicely, then again we are in a soft water area down here.
    This scenario could be applied to so many things though, best not reuse the backplate after fitting new bearings, it might not be flat and could leak or fracture, same as rear half drum, soap and sump hoses, changing the carbons and not the holders, door seals without changing the clip that holds it on, the list could go on!
    I think its a case of deciding whats best when in site, no correct way and no wrong way and we can all recall something bad happening when we didnt do something that some one else would have done!
