ParticipantGot the dreaded yearly visit from the yellow pages rep set up for Monday 😥 It got me thinking I should drag myself into the present century and set up my own website, then maybe I can give less of my hard earned to these vultures :rolls:
Was wondering what the best self design site to use is, also, would be grateful for advice on content and wording, and how to ensure my site has a good chance of being seen by people in my area.
Lastly, there seems to be a huge number of hosting providers out there, any recommendations on the good ones?
Thanks,
Eddie.

Couldn’t agree more Eddie, Yellow Pages is so not the way to get new business these days. A web site presence is vital for any modern business especially in the service sector. These days setting the ball in motion without getting hooked into the claws of these so called web designers who give you as much bull shite as you want to hear coupled with how much they can extract from your wallet.
A good starting place for you to consider may be HERE and also do check out the Google Maps thread as that too is the way forward.

Cheers Martin, yeah, most certainly will design one myself, if I have to suffer any more bull crap from peeps who charge too much for very little effort I may well strangle someone 👿
It’s just a simple single page affair I have in mind anyway, seems to be plenty of free sites that can help achieve that.

Ask Ken… He was doing this for all of us a short while ago.

I use Fasthosts as it used to be UKReg;
Then I point to our server.
Now we use mostly Joomla installations and that allows me to use all the funky security and SEO stuff I’ve bought as I always buy the “unlimited” use licences for that sort of thing.
Doing that makes maintenance far, far easier.
If there was enough interest and, people wanted to pitch in for the cost of another server, I’d run any sites you want. Bear in mind that a server, hosting and maintenance is upwards of £1.5K per month and I use Laser as Li and Trevor are both superb at when they do and friends I’ve known for years.
Seriously, if there was enough interest I’d look at it and give you guys your very own dedicated web space but, I’d need to split up the cost etc. as I can’t afford to do it for free.

If you just want something simple and free set up a google account, log in, go to business solutions and in there some where in there you should find web site design that’s free, also set up a google places page that can be pointed at the site. I get most of my work from this and yell.com. This year I have only gone for the £66 line ad in yellow pages.

Some good info there guys, thanks. I got talked into a basic yell adwords deal when the rep was here last year, according to their stats it had 160 hits to date 😯 crap IMO 🙁
Really thought it would generate more, I do tend to appear on the first page if you Google repairs in my area.
I dunno, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I think demand for repairs is simply declining more and more each year, it really does not matter how or where you advertise if no one is looking in the first place.
Yep, its another quiet week and I’m on a downer! Oh well, all the more time to work on my website 🙂

The best advertising method besides recommendations is a business card drop. I get some nice looking cards made up at vista print with a calendar on the back and get the delivered locally. I also give a few to each customer and ask them to hand them to there friends and also time permitting post them through the letter boxes around my calls.

Yes thanks Steve, they do make some good cards, for a good price too, still using them, but I need some one to do me a website, and it does seem very hard, as the prices is over board, I even tried the 1and1 site free trile, but they wanted to charge me within a few days, as my bank saw that, they blocked my bank account as they knew this company tried it before, then read on the web they take payments out your account with out any concent,so canceled that straight away, has been quite a bit of a struggle to get a website running,
