The spider may also have a bearing on this. I often receive Hotpoint ones which have very tiny dents or scratches in the brass bit. No attempt seems to be made to protect this important surface by some manufacturers. I wonder if they send us the rejects.

Mike.Most seals use water as their lubricant (unlees they are greased). Better to let any water that does get past the seal to escape than damage the bearing.

Have been using bearing seal lubricant for a number of years now but not sure if it makes the job last any longer though. Did get a call back to a WM 62 a couple of years ago complaining that the machine was noisey after my drum bearing change 😥 turned out to be not enough seal lubricant in the seal lip 😥

Yes but that doesn’t explain why Zanussi don’t do it. I’m wondering if they work on the theory that the air trapped behind the seal would, by its pressure, impede water ingress. ❓
