ParticipantHi all, i’ve been asked by a local business that sells secondhand items to recon white goods for them. the thing is, i have no idea what to charge them.
obviously it would be less than to the public plus i would be using their work area and my gear. but i’m stymied, any advice/ suggetion?ta.

I guess it all boils down to how much extra work you need. Time spent on there work is time away from your work. If you price it too low you could start to resent it when your work gets busy.
No one can tell you what to charge, it’s all down to what you can afford to do it for.

I did similar work for a local charity but it meant taking one day a week off the road to spend a whole day repairing several appliances (mostly washers and t/dryers) for them. I charged half my normal hourly rate by the way.
The problem was that secondhand machines end up in the most undesirable households, the poor unfortunates where ‘recalls’ became an issue in more ways than one. The charity then expected me to fix them FOC even when they were returned to their warehouse. So my association with them only lasted about 9 months.
So my advice would be………don’t bother!

I second that Martin, I only lasted about 6 months.

Yes correct Martin, just got fed up with their attitude and if I got held up and couldn’t go for some reason they used to give my wife hell on the phone.

Since they are a business not a charity there are no “morals” involved, so all factors apply.
