Nope, that’s part of the joy of this job I find, spending an age sussing an oddball fault then resolving it…….

You’ll never forget it either 😀

    Indeed 🙂

I always remember the time when I had a Hoover A3260 fusing. It was bang down to earth. In those days I used to test down live and earth on the plug and just disconnect things to see if it cleared the short. I leaned the machine back and unplugged the motor but it was still down to earth at the plug end. Next the heater, then the suppressor. Then I started to scratch my head as no other component was known to me to go down to earth and fuse. I disconnected the door interlock, then the thermostat, even the water valves and pump. I was stumped, the only thing I hadn’t disconnected was the timer and that surely can’t go down to earth.

Finally I tipped the machine back again and saw that the motor plug (which was clipped to the tub weight) was still partially connected! I had pulled the plug out, but it was held in place by the big green clip on the tub weight and as I’d let go it was still partially pushed back into the motor. The short was on the motor all along as first suspected and I’d turned a 1 minute diagnosis into over half an hour of head scratching. Since then I’ve always tested the components directly.

A few years ago I was called out to an integrated dishwasher that would intermittantly switch off halfway through the program. I did all the usual checks insulation, continuity and visual, couldn’t find any fault.I had to remove the appliance from under the worktop to complete these checks. Put appliance through a full program, not a fault in sight, replaced appliance and left. Called back to customers as the fault was still there, only now it was stopping halfway through for an hour and then continuing to the end of the program. On further investigation it appeared that the appliance was touching the switch of the supply spur, which meant when it was heating, the back panel was expanding and switching off the power and as it was cooling down, contracting and switching the power back on again, problem solved

Couple of years ago i delivered a graded Hoover washing machine one of the Six range if I remember. Installed the thing, then put it on for a water test.
I couldn’t get it to work, so I had the top off (obviously the customer wasn’t too pleased).
Got power to it etc, board and connectors seemed ok.
About half an hour later i was testing the mains switch and realised the wording on the facia was wrong. It showed push in for on and it was an out for on type.
    My how we laughed.Not!!!!

I had similar fault where a washing machine was turning off the socket switch with the drain hose pressed against it when on spin. Yours is a good one.

Re: What’s the most illogical fault you’ve had to find?

A few years back now I was called to a customer with a hotpoint twin tub. The spin motor had burnt out and the price put her off repairing it. With a bit of persuasion I talked her into an Automatic and duly delivered, installed and tested it.

    So far so good.

About 3 weeks later she stops me in the street and tells me “she wishes she had got one years ago, except it uses all her hot water”. She explained that when the washing is finished there is no hot water left in her immersion tank. My first thought was have I put the fill pipes on the wrong way? so I tell her I`ll come and check it out.

I check the machine out, Pipes are on correctly, Valves are wired right way round, Couldn`t find anything wrong so I asked her what programme this happens on and she tells me she`s about to put a wash on so she`ll show me.

She duly loads the machine, puts in the powder, shuts the door, selects a 40degree wash pulls out the timer knob and wait for it……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………TURNS THE TAPS ON HER SINK ON!!!!

Because she seen me connect the fill hoses under her sink she thought the water went down the sink then through the hoses. How do you get out of that one without making them feel stupid?

Went to a customer who complained that her larder fridge was more noisy than usual.

The fridge was in a cupboard in her bedroom and the noise was annoying her when she tried to sleep.

Looked in the cupboard and down on the floor by the side of the fridge was a radio tuned slightly off station, switched it off, problem solved. 😀 😀 😀

That reminded me of something DAR01 😀

A couple of years back my Mother-In-Law gave me the “help” phone call as her freezer was making “bleeping” noises. As I couldn’t remember what make etc it was I asked her to make sure the door was shut etc, which she checked, all OK.

So, I flew round there thinking it was the high temp alarm going off to find it wasn’t even electronic !!

It was an unused smoke alarm in the cupboard above it “bleeping” warning her the battery was low 🙄

i went to a whirlpool integrated fridge freezer , many years ago , in west london. the complaint was that the panel doors were faulty, as the fridge door wouldn’t stay closed.
i advised that the fault was no more serious than a poorly positioned champagne bottle 😕 yet had to remove entire contents of the shelves to prove the point, and was still treated to the ” dont believe you ” look 🙄

Slightly OT, but on a similar theme, I was doing a repair for an ‘older’ lady and heard a bleeping noise. I mentioned it to her and she said, ” I know about it, I think I have a bird stuck in the loft, I have a builder coming round later to have a look”. I did advise her about the need to change the smoke alarm battery. 🙂
