I’ve had a Dewalt DEWALT DW920K cordless screwdriver for years but the batteries are not holding a charge.
Due to an EU directive you can no longer buy NiCd batteries and if I buy a NiMH equivelant I can’t find a suitable charger.
I have looked for alternatives but can’t find anything suitable so thought I should look into investing in a new Cordless screwdriver.

I am looking for something powerful enough to do the job preferably inline like the Dewalt as it fits in the tool-case.

What are other engineers using that they can recommend?

    Thanks for the link Dave.
I guess they can get away with supplying NiCd as they are in China.
I’m a bit uncertain purchasing rechargeable batteries from china as there is quite a bit of negative information online regarding this and if the quality is anything like their washing machines…..need I say More?
Also, purchasing from China, where do I stand importing something against the EU directive and what happens to my consumer rights?

    (Edit) Just found this https://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/www. … tery.co.uk

Having said that, it still might be worth having a go so I can use my old rechargeable Screwdriver again (maybe not now).
In the mean time it would still be useful to know if there are any other recommendations for an alternative?

this company has a uk phone number ring them. from what I can see you may well be able to use the same charger its only li-ion that needs special treatment.

    Re: Which cordless screwdriver?

I have spoken to a couple of battery suppliers (including this one) and they have advise not to use the Ni-Cd charger for Ni-MH batteries as it could be dangerous.
I have also looked for a charger for the Ni-MH but the only one I can find is about £100 which isn’t far off the cost of the Screwdriver, factor in a couple of replacement batteries ad it’s not viable.

    When my Dewalt cordless screwdriver died I bought this just to get me out of trouble;

    http://www.screwfix.com/p/energer-ens46 … iver/34416

As I no longer strip down to do bearing jobs (tub bolts) – a year or so on I find it perfectly adequate for most jobs. One speed though.

    Re: Which cordless screwdriver?

The dewalt I had before was inline but could be angled if preferred. This was a great arrangement as it didn’t take up too much space in the toolbox. It had a really good torque and a battery would last a good week or two.
I have just found this http://www.powertoolworld.co.uk/bosch-gwi-10-8-v-li-angle-drill-driver-inc-2x-2-0ah-batt#gref which looks interesting if not a bit pricey.

    Re: Which cordless screwdriver?

Sounds like you have the same Dewalt that I had.
That’s why I didn’t buy the replacement Dewalt because it was to big for my overcrowded tool box!!

It was perfect for the work we do

How does the one you have now (Energer) compare with power?

It’s crap compared to the Dewalt no comparison.
I have realised though that I only need something to undo a dozen screws per job.

    Re: Which cordless screwdriver?

I’ve just found a couple of Makita ‘Pencil’ screwdrivers.
Both look good, compact with 7.2v batteries.

    and
    http://www.makitauk.com/products/cordle … river.html
The difference between the two models is one uses a torque setting the other is an impact screwdriver.
Has anyone tried an ‘impact’ screwdriver for this trade?

Sweet cheeses! Bl@@dy expensive too. I wouldn’t waste my hard earned on them. As for an impact driver? Not needed in this trade IMO.

The Dewalt I’m replacing because I’m struggling to get replacement batteries for is 14 years old. It was expensive when I bought it but considering the use it’s had, it was a bloody good investment, so I don’t mind spending a bit more to get something descent again.

    Re: Which cordless screwdriver?

Ive recently had the TD022DSE impact version and find it great. Tight screws are loosened effortlessly by initial impact and then spun out rapidly when free enough.
