Nope, Merloni – usually seen as “Servis” in the UK. Not Italy’s finest……

Interesting development Penguin … got it working !
Thinking along your lines of the timer/programmer switch playing up, I gave it one last attempt – I sprayed a quarter of a can of switch cleaner around the timer rotating it at the sametime & left it to thoroughly dry out. I had already given it a quick blast with that and some WD40 a while ago.
I completely forgot about it until I was going to take it to the scrappy & remembered I should try it again & it worked perfectly … I’ve now done 3 washes at differing temps and programs – all fine.
Your diagnosis was obviously spot on – congrats & thanks
Any thoughts on how long this is likely to last ..?
Cheers, Peter

Thanks for your faith in my ‘switch cleaner abilities’ Cockney Steve ..!!
I suppose its like saying how long is a piece of string.
I had a machine I bought second-hand at uni (hears ago ..) for about £30 – it had been standing out in the rain for a few weeks before I bought it, but it ran fine, at least for a while. Then it would stop in the middle of a program, I doused the timer with WD40, swicthed it back on & away it went – never touched it again. It went through several houses with us, then I eventually sold it in the local paper for £40 and bought a second-hand washer-dryer! This is why I learnt to have a fiddle with them myself. 🙂

Peter, In my (very limited) experience, these “clockwork” programmers suffer 2 major problems.
1- contacts oxidise with lack of use -(as in your machine outside scenario)
high resistance/intermittent connection = erratic cycling.
2- burnt contacts – due to high current and arcing (slow break or make )
the net result is the same as in “1,”but the contact facing burns away , overheating and “stuck” (welded) contacts result.
THEORETICALLY the contacts are self-cleaning due to a wiping -action on make/break…..doesn’t always work out , especially in “2” where, basically, it’s worn out.
Spinning the dial, a few times, has been known to ressurect a “dead” timer 😉

Sounds feasible Steve, we’ll see how it goes. The machine is back in a house we let out so I’ll await a call. 🙂
Cheers, Peter
