The drum on my W120 washing machine is just not turning, the machine is just going through it’s normal cycle filling up and emptying but the drum is just not turning. I have had the back off the machine and the belt appears to be fine, the tension seems the same as normal and the drum is turning freely. I have already had this machine to pieces a few times removing items from the inner drum, checking the pressure chamber once when it overfilled the drum, and also replacing the pump. But I am not totally clued up with electrics and how to diagnose this one. The motor is extremley expensive and not worth taking the chance buying this considering the machine is 11 years old, although I have no kids so it has not had a hard life. If there was something that I could try that was fairly cheap, i.e motor brushes? I would give it a go, but otherwise I think it will have to be scrapped which is a shame as I have read that most new cheap washing machines are rubbish and I cannot afford a decent one. One other thing to note is that lately it has been blowing a 13 amp plug fuse a few times, usually when the tumble dryer is also on connected to the same socket. This time when I discovered the fault it had blown the fuse and all the clothes were wet that were inside in it. I just thought that this was the cause of the fault i.e the fuse blowing mid cycle. But when I replaced the fuse and tried the machine, the drum is just not moving. Any advice please, or is it new machine time 😥

take the motor off and check the brushes
they are in plastic holders and shouldn`t be much more than £10 to £15

Thanks for the advice I have taken the brushes out, but they seem to have a bit left on them although I am no expert. One is protuding out of it’s plastic cover by around 1.9 cm and the other about 1.7 cm. Obviously they push in on the springs when mounted so I do not know if this is enough. As when the bushes are gone are they worn down that much that they fail to make any contact? Sorry I haven’t a clue about this.

brushes are ok at that length…not great but ok…sounds like a module fault.

it will be a dry joint on the module plug out before fiddling

Thanks for the advice, but sorry for sounding like a total idiot but what is the module? Is this the programmer that you use to select the desired program? It is analogue on this machine as it is quite old. How do I tell what is a dry joint, is a new module expensive? Thanks for the advice by the way and sorry for being so stupid..

the module is a printed circuit board,it is situated behind the front panel on the right hand side.If you take the module of have a look for burn marks on the solder joint near the black relay power off of course

you can see the module from the back when the back panel is off. from the back the module is on the left about 9″ from the floor. it’s trickey to get to it ftom the back so i find it’s easier to take the front panel off.

Check also for detergent leaking from drum onto motor. Have seen one of these today.

Re: Whirlpool W120 Washing Machine Drum Not Moving

Thanks for the great advice I already had the front of the machine off to get at the brushes without taking the motor off. I have removed the PCB and there are a few soot marks on some of the joints near the centre of the board, but the joints look ok, there is also a bit of soot on some of the tracks on the PCB. However there is one joint where a black box which I assume is a relay that is connected to that is totally gone see pic below.

By the looks of things this could be the problem? I will re-solder this and will also fit some new brushes, thanks for the advice great forum, will let you know how I get on 😀

Re: Whirlpool W120 Washing Machine Drum Not Moving

Cheers thanks for all the replies guys and great help. Fitted new brushes today and re-soldered the broken PCB joint and everything is fine now 😀 Think I may need a new interlock switch soon for the door as I sometimes have to slam it or give it a bang on the door and then it starts, but I can live with that until it goes. Thanks very much for the help it has saved me a fortune 8)
