my whirlpool washing machine awod 4505 will not wash when i try to start, the pump works as normal for approx 10 secs, door locks ok,but as water is about to be enter machine stops and red service light illuminates.pressing the reset button works but after a few secs same happens again. im pretty sure water inlet valve is clean and ok but it appears that its not receiving any voltage. control board problem? machine is only 3 years old.

    Hi,

Have you checked the water valves for continuity?

If the inlet valves test ok ,try the motor brushes it may check those before it goes to fill?

Thanks kwatt and applianceman, motor brushes look ok,about 30mm of carbon left on both. have checked the water valve with ohm-meter(its a cold fill only)reads about 6 ohms on both solenoids, how exactly do i check for continuity.By the way if i just try to do a spin only, still have no success, red service light still comes on. Thanks again.

Hi: To check the water inlet valves for continuity, make a note of the wires to the valve coil and remove them. If using a standard manual ranging meter you will need to set it to the 20 Kilohm range, Short the 2 test leads together to make sure the meter reads ok. Now place your leads across the terminals of the valve coil & make sure you have continuity, you don’t need to worry about resistance value just that you have a continuous coil. Once you’ve done this replace the leads on the coil & repeat the procedure for any other valves.

Re: whirlpool washing machine awod 4505

Hi: You could find that there’s a blockage in the pressure sensing system, which could cause the machine to think that it’s already full and throw up an error.
You need to find the pressure switch on your machine, once you’ve found this if you follow the small pipe comming from the bottom of it you should see the pressure vessel where it enters the tub. It only takes a small amount of sediment to block the inlet to the pressure vessel & stop correct sensing.
If you carefully remove this vessel & make sure that it’s clean you may be lucky, take care when re-fitting that no water enters the vessel otherwise the pressure switch won’t operate properly.

    As allways power off first.

thanks again specialist, have done as you said, pressure switch and pipe clean, also the vessel. tested the pressure switch by blowing into inlet gently, seems ok,heard the click. still trying to get to the bottom of this problem.!!!

Re: whirlpool washing machine awod 4505

If you haven’t done so already check the heater, if its open circuit or low insulation it will give you this fault. Also motor connector / wiring needs to be pulled and checked.

    Power off of course.

Thanks timdowning, checked heater element with meter, not getting any continuity or ohm reading, can i now take it that the element is gone? will i need to split the drum to replace it? i’ve replaced bearings on several machines before so its not a problem.

Re: whirlpool washing machine awod 4505

lol got there in the end. To replace the heater you should just be able to undo the nut in the middle of the element(usually 8mm socket) this will release the rubber seal that holds it all in. I tend to try and not take the nut off all of the way unless the rubber seal really doesn’t want to budge (you will see why not when you take it out)the heater can move in and out and not move the rubber seal if you take the nut off(hope that makes sence) 😳 . let us know how you get on with it!
