Never bothered to work it out Martin, it’s usually only a couple of days a year at most if that.
The odd bad winter grinds the whole UK to a halt let alone Scotland.
Different up North where Barrie and Alan are, it can get grim when you get inland a bit.

Just ordered a set for just over £200. It’s not always about getting there but getting there safe. Will be worth their weight in gold around the windy lanes around dartmoor

Apparently the long range weather forecast for S/W England (seaweed and fir cones hanging from a window ledge at the Met Office in Exeter) predicts it’s gonna pi$$ with rain all winter long. No snow!
Rumour has it also that Argos are stockpiling theirEMERGENCY TRANSPORT SOLUTION

Winter tyres are only suitable for a thin layer of snow. When the thick stuff lands, I struggle for ten minutes to fit my snow chains and then they always get me home. Plus its a nice smug feeling passing over the M77 seeing all the cars stuck below.:)

Not strictly true, I have managed to get through six inches of snow on some decent slopes round here with my winter tyres on.

I think there is a bit of confusion here, winter tyres and snow tyres are not the same. Winter tyres are used when the temperature drops below 7 degrees on an average day, snow tyres are for snow only. I have been using winter tyres for the past 4 years and apart from the initial cost of buying a spare set of wheels they cost very little to run. When I had the Merc estate it was diabolically bad in the wet/ice/snow and when I put the winter wheels on the difference is amazing. As Jim says they will take you up a hill covered in snow, not slip about in the ice and the stopping distance in the wet is vastly improved. I am in the mild Midlands and would not approach a winter again without having these tyres on my car.

Winter tyres are not just about getting going or keeping going in bad weather. Stopping and turning are far more important than actually getting moving in the first place.
A look at This video should be enough to convince anyone of the merits of sensible shoes in the winter months. You wouldn’t go out in sandals in winter now would you, even Roly16 puts his trousers on in winter. 😀

I think we’re sold on the idea of winter tyres Jim. All that’s needed now is for the WTA to strike up a deal with Kwikfit and we can all get a new set of boots! 😀

My point was not to devalue the benefit of winter tyres.
It was to point out that, try as you might, you cannot get around some of the perennial winter travel problems.

Ah, but with winter tyres you can get round some of them as opposed to crashing right into them.

True, but it doesn’t stop the other muppets crashing into you. 😉

Had winter tyres on the van for 4 years now and just keep them on all year round, dont need to buy the expensive ones the cheaper are as good and they give a better mileage also.
