    Re: AEG lavamat 74640

Got the bearings out – found an another thread that explained how to do it (tap it through – HARD!).

You are no doubt correct about taking the whole tub out, but now I’m over halfway (bearings in, but not put tub back together yet), I might as well continue. At least I have a bit more experience of how these type hang together. It’s a less scary prospect to only take half out when you’ve not done it b4, now I understand where you’re coming from!

Think I’ll look out for spider type drum bearing designs next time, much easier in comparison. What makes models are good for this? (also have an Ariston Margerita things and changed those, not too bad in comparison to this AEG thingy).

    Thanks very much,

    Peter

OK, split the drum finally, but how do you get at the bearings? (Didn’t have to take the whole tub out, managed to get at all the bolts eventually but its a bi*** of a job!).

I have the rear half of the stainless drum in the plastic case, I can see if I rotate the drum 3 pairs of bolts that presumably hold the metal drum in the case. I’ve removed these, but can’t get the stainless drum out so far to get at the bearing – or so you tap the whole drum out ???

Any help much appreciated, especially since I’ve got this far!

    Thanks,

    Peter

    Hi folks,

I have the same job to do. I expected that I would be able to get at the drum bolts from the back, but no they point to the front. Has anyone any idea how this chap did this in situ? Would it have been from underneath?

    Regards, Peter

Cheers Steve, yes seen the joint, just didn’t realise it came off that easily. It looked like standard brown grease, so that’s what I added, I’ll see if I can get the other one off and check that one too using your method.

I have another story for you. I have a Hotpoint in another flat which I bought 2nd hand, they gave me the transit bolt for it which I fitted for a change. When I ran it, it was leaking slightly from where the transit bolt had been inserted. I think they had given me a different bolt which was longer & it pierced the drum.

This was another of those machines where the back doesn’t come off – answer – cut a hot in the back with a grinder, realised the problem, filled it with silicon, 3 years on, no probs 😀 (yet!)

Sounds feasible Steve, we’ll see how it goes. The machine is back in a house we let out so I’ll await a call. 🙂

Thanks for your faith in my ‘switch cleaner abilities’ Cockney Steve ..!!

I suppose its like saying how long is a piece of string.

I had a machine I bought second-hand at uni (hears ago ..) for about £30 – it had been standing out in the rain for a few weeks before I bought it, but it ran fine, at least for a while. Then it would stop in the middle of a program, I doused the timer with WD40, swicthed it back on & away it went – never touched it again. It went through several houses with us, then I eventually sold it in the local paper for £40 and bought a second-hand washer-dryer! This is why I learnt to have a fiddle with them myself. 🙂

I’ve had the quote for the replacement dampers – quite reasonable. But before I ordered them, I thought I had better make sure I can get the others off as I’m not entirely sure what you mean by ‘split the cabinet’.

I managed to get one damper off from underneath & upon inspection I could not see what was wrong with it. I thought it would be more complicated than it was, just a tube inside a tube, the inner tube having some fabric strips around it & covered in grease. I greesed it up a bit & put it back together.

The other strut is more difficult to get to. Do you really mean to split the whole white outer casing to get it off – seems a big and fiddly job? It doesn’t look impossible to get the other strut off from underneath just not easy.

Do you know what wears on these dampers? As I said it did not look worn & (without trying to doubt your diagnosis!!) I’m not convinced it will help? I ran the machine last night & didn’t hear it, I’m wondering if greasing one of them has helped – the grease could help restrict the air-flow which is how I presume it works.

The machines running again tonight, so I’ll take note it I hear it.

Any thoughts on this, much appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Peter

ah ha, now I know what you mean ..! (doh!!)

I didn’t realise the casing came apart, from what I could see you could do this by just tipping the machine at 45 degrees and doing it from underneath. I’ll work it out anyway … I think.

    Cheers guys,

Re: Zanussi Jetsystem Turbodry – spin is noisy & clanks

Thanks for the prompt reply Penguin – again!

The dampers appear to just fit to the bottom of the drum with a plastic peg going through to hold it onto the drum. It doesn’t look like you need to split the drum …? The bottom of the damper fixed to the metal frame of the actual machine.

Are you thinking of a different machine or have I got something wrong here?

    Thanks, Peter

Just to add – bearings sound pretty much OK.

    Re: Whirlpool AWG320/2 – Stopping mid-cycle

Interesting development Penguin … got it working !

Thinking along your lines of the timer/programmer switch playing up, I gave it one last attempt – I sprayed a quarter of a can of switch cleaner around the timer rotating it at the sametime & left it to thoroughly dry out. I had already given it a quick blast with that and some WD40 a while ago.

I completely forgot about it until I was going to take it to the scrappy & remembered I should try it again & it worked perfectly … I’ve now done 3 washes at differing temps and programs – all fine.

Your diagnosis was obviously spot on – congrats & thanks

Any thoughts on how long this is likely to last ..?

    Cheers, Peter

    Re: Whirlpool AWG320/2 – Stopping mid-cycle

    oooooooooooo 🙁

Well I bought it 2nd hand for less than that & have had 4 years out of it, but besides that it’s all good. Anyone want some spares ?

I see some parts are marked Ariston on it, is Whirlpool basically a badged Ariston?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Re: Whirlpool AWG320/2 – Stopping mid-cycle

Hi again – the 12Nc number? Well I’ve tried to write all the numbers I can off the machine. On the side it has – 2000 2031324 014051019 0101, on a sticker behind the door it says ‘Service 8537 320 15280 990020 031324’.

    Hope that means something!

    Thanks, Peter

    Re: Whirlpool AWG320/2 – Stopping mid-cycle

Cheers for replying Penguin45 – thought I was talking to myself! (realise you are all unpaid volunteers …) 😥

OK, I start it on program 7 – synthetic max 60 degree wash – temp at 60 degrees. It fills with cold water (swicthed wires onto hot solenoid momentarily & that one works too) & then goes into a rinse. It is not heating the water at that point (put meter across heater) or at all. It rinses for a few minutes, then it drains all the water & continues spinning slowly stopping now & then. This continues for towards 10 minutes, drain pump running all the while. It breaks out into a faster spin for about 10 secs during this period, then continues trying to drain & drum moving slowly.

Then it clicks to one knotch before No. 8 (rinse) – it then just stops & doesn’t go any further …

Despite it stopping, something doesn’t seem right here. The washing powder is being dispensed with after only a few minutes, surely it should heat up, etc before it stops.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks again, Peter

    Re: Whirlpool AWG320/2 – Stopping mid-cycle

I’m wondering if this is something to do with the element/thermostat. I don’t think the water is heating up and it stops a notch before it goes onto rinse.

    I’ve done some tests:

Across the heater element in the back of teh drum I get 29ohms. Presumably OK?

On what I think is a thermostat (to the side of the heater element, little black round thing). It has 4 wires gong to it, 2 grey, 1 of which goes to the element & 2 white which go back to the loom.

Test across grey wire terminal – have continuity, no ohm reading
Test across white terminals – 7.1 ohms (on 20K range).

I’m not so sure on testing these – does this sound OK?

I appreciate your help if anyone can put up with my drivel !

    Peter
