Hello All,
After a couple of years in the garage waiting for a rainy day, it’s time to get rid. Before I take it to the skip I thought I would ask here if anyone you like this for spares or repair.
The unit has provided many years of fantastic service requiring only the usual replacement drive belts and water pumps now and again. As you will see in this thread, around 2 years ago it developed a fault with the warm wash cycles which after replacing the timer unit (brand new original item) turned out to be a fault in the hot water valve. After this repair it worked perfectly for a month then began stopping mid cycle. At this point it was decided to replace rather than repair again.
The machine is in pretty good, used condition and comes with the original (still functional) timer and a spare serviceable water pump.
Be a good machine for someone wanting spares but I am sure could also be fixed by someone who knows what they’re looking for.
Going free to anyone who would like it. To be collected near Lancaster.
All the best, Stuart

Thank you for the replies!
I am back in the UK next weekend so I will test the gearbox as you suggested.
If there is a problem with the gearbox, can these be serviced/rebuilt? I see they are no longer available as spares so would this mean the machine is beyond repair?
Many thanks, Stuart

To be honest, I would be very surprised if it was the timer too. I changed this part only a couple of months ago so it’s nearly new…
Is there any way to test/repair the thermal cutout on the motor?

Thanks for the reply!
There certainly seems to be nothing wrong with the gearbox. Stopping the oscillation of the spindle is not possible at all.
The spindle seems to be doing the correct 90 degree oscillation however it is only doing this for 3 short bursts during the whole agitation period. I guess these only last for 5 seconds each time.
Could this mean a problem with the timer?

Hello All!
Thanks for the reply.
I’ve just run the machine and as suggested I held the spindle whilst it was doing its (very short) agitation movements. There seems to be nothing wrong with the gearbox as I could not stop the sprindle moving back and forth. When the machine is off, the spindle can be turned a relatively small amount then it locks. I presume this is standard.
So, any suggestions where I should look next. The machine really does do very little action during the agitation phase…
All the best, Stuart

Thanks for the reply!
The water is certainly getting up to temperature. My mother tried to swirl the clothes around manually so the soapy water would not be wasted and she mentioned that is was very hot.
On this basis, could it be a faulty temperature sensor?
Thanks again, Stuart

Hello again!
I’ve finally managed to get some more info from my mother about what is going wrong with the washer.
Apparently everything is working as normal except for the agitation phases. She said that whilst in the washing phase (number 7?) it just makes 3 attempts to rotate the clothes whilst the detergent is added. I seems the timer is working correctly and one it reaches the end of this phase it drains the water correctly. When the fresh water is added is only agitates another 3 times for ca 1 rotation before draining again. The spin cycle seems to work fine.
So, any ideas what might be the problem?
I’m half tempted to get a used Miele machine. This Hotpoint top loader has been great but I fear it’s getting a little long in the tooth.
Many thanks in advance, Stuart

Hello All,
Checked out the pipes around the pump and all seemed to be fine. Ran the washer again and it used the soap from the tray however now it is not rotating hte drum when the soapy water is on the clothes. I just makes a couple of half hearted turns then empties out the water again.
Does this sound a simple thing to fix or should I be looking for a replacement machine?
Many thanks, Stuart

Great!
So it’s all pointing to a faulty pump. I’ll have a look on the site and order one so I’m armed at the weekend.
Many thanks, Stuart

I’m away at the moment but i will ask my mother for further details of the problem.
Just for info, the failure seemed to happen when we changed our heating tank. The new tank provides hot water at mains pressure where the old one was gravity fed. The machine now sounds very different when filling up. Could this increase in hot water pressure cause a problem?

Thanks!
I’ll have a think about it. That’s a lot of $$$ for a non functional item…

Everything is working perfectly again. Thanks to iadom a Hotpoint 9605 lives to spin another day!
I checked all the at the timer and then replaced the hot water fill valve. Also took the time to hoover out all the fluff and dust which had built up in the back of the machine. I now have a machine which is nearly as good as new and a spare timer.
Since the machine is in such good shape I am now tempted to replace the plastic front panel which has cracked around the timer dial. Are these difficult to get? I guess I know the answer to that…
Anyway, thanks again for all your help! Stuart

That sounds exactly like what is happening…
I will investigate and let you know how it goes. The purple bridging wire on the side of the timer nearest the side of the machine was the one I was a little unsure about but I’ll trace the whole lot though just to make sure everything is correct.
Better get a new battery for my multimeter and a very large cup of tea.
Many thanks!

Wow, many thanks for the reply and advice.
Normally I would have called in someone to look at the machine however the guy we used to use has retired and he told me that very few people would work on such an old model. Will most people in the “find an engineer” search know this type of machine?
Fortunately I had a spare timer in my box of washing machine parts so this has not been too costly exercise. Yet…
I will have a look again at the timer wiring over the weekend and check all the connections. If I can get cycle 7 working again I will order the part you mentioned. It’s got to be worth a try.
Thank you again, Stuart

Great, thank you for the link!
The machine would only do cycle #7. All the other cycles did nothing at all.
Since changing the timer #7 is still the only cycle to do anything at all but it is now not working correctly as the powder is not used in the tray. This is why I wonder if I completed the wiring correctly.
Presume there is something else wrong with the machine given the failure is still similar to before.
Do you think this is something I can fix myself or should I call in the pro’s?
Many thanks! Stuart
