I’m in Worthing, West Sussex. Nothing came up for Maytag using Repairs@ but thanks for the pointer. A local engineer just left – you were spot on with your diagnosis – the freezer was all frosted up because of a faulty heating element. Estimate of £160-185 plus VAT to supply and fit a new one.
Hmm.hard to know what to do now. I could replace the element and it will run for another xx years. On the other hand, it’s 10 years old now so this might be the start of a series of component failures. What’s the usual life expectancy of a Maytag fridge/freezer of this vintge ?
In addition, the fridge door handle is broken and the freezer door is not always sealing properly at the top apparently. I hate to throw away something when it is still serviceable, but I think It may be time for a new one. The Maytag is far bigger than we actually need, so the replacement should cost a fair bit less than an equivalent American style unit.
