Recently in the UK Whitegoods forums there has been mention made of a plan from government to introduce a new way of paying for road taxation. Of course the term “road tax” is misused as it is actually called “Vehicle Excise Duty” or VED, the money can (and is) used for many purposes other than the upkeep of our road network.
But don’t forget we already have one of the highest taxation levels on fuel in the world, right here in the UK. We are already paying over the odds to use our roads system which has been neglected in many ways in recent years.
If you drive a car, please read ““
Sarah Kennedy was talking about this proposed car tax scheme on Radio 2 recently and that has uncovered some rather alarming possibilities.
Apparently there less than 2 weeks left to register your objection to the ‘Pay As You Go’ road tax. The petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn’t tell anybody about it.
Therefore at the time of Sarah’s comments only 250,000 people had signed it and 750,000 signatures are required for the government to at least take any notice.
However we can report that the figure is now over a million but we need to show just how much we are against this sort of policy so vote if you agree with the petition.
The government’s proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it.
The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. In effect the UK government want us to pay for a piece of technology in our cars that will enable them to tax us, in addition to the tax we already pay in fuel duty and VAT on the cost of the fuel and the duty!
No doubt we’ll also have to pay VAT on the cost of the device and fitting as well. It is farcical and outrageous.
A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month.
And, on top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked.
Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill.
If you are concerned about this Orwellian plan and want to stop the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10’s new website (link below) and pass this on to as many people as possible.

Of course the implications for those of us that require to travel, like service engineers, is astounding. It is also very possible that this may well affect the cost of delivering appliances let alone repairing them as many businesses will be unable to absorb this cost. So please, if you run a repair business or indeed any business that relies on transport via our road network please sign this petition to make our government understand that we already pay enough tax to use our roads.
