    Hello Anyone,

Above oven is approximately 5 ish years old – and was in the house we moved into a few years ago.

Several things are worrying me: –

    1. Don’t know if this is normal but the door seems dangerously hot when the oven is on. Don’t have kids, otherwise this would be a major problem.

    2. It seems to smoke (as in grease/food rather than electrical) every time I use the oven. It’s so bad that I have to have all windows open (kitchen is quite small) and can’t use it if we have guests. I had it professionally cleaned about 6 months ago and it was fine for about 2 months. It’s bad enough with the fan-assisted selector control, but if I ever just use the “regular” control, it’s just awful.

It’s kept pretty clean and I just don’t know what the problem is.

    Help!
    Any suggestions?
    Hazel

Does it appear hotter than usual/burning food/taking longer for the light to go out when it has reached temperature?

    Regards

    Hi Simon,

I think it’s always been this hot (and has been the bane of my life since moving in here).

Yes, it does tend to burn things – especially cakes – they go black around the edges before the inside is cooked. I do reduce the recommended cooking temperature when using fan-assisted. I have started having to cook some things covered in foil just to avoid the smoking and burning smell.

It takes about 20-25 minutes to heat the oven up to 180 dg C. I’m not sure how quickly it’s supposed to heat up but that is another annoyance. 😕

    Would welcome your comments/suggestions.

    Thanks, Hazel

If you know anybody with an oven thermometer to check temp selected against actual temp. If the fan in the oven is spinning o.k. i suspect the oven to have a temperature control fault. Idont know if there is one in your area but John Lewis sell them. Otherwise cliking on Repairs@ on LHS of screen may be able to help you regarding fixing it.

    Thanks for that Simon,

I’ll try and get hold of an oven thermometer. Am in London so plenty of John Lewis stores around.

Re: the fan – it sounds like it’s spinning – as in, a totally different sound compared to just using the convection oven setting.

Do you know if a temperature control fault is serious (expensive) to fix – if that is the problem?

    Thanks again for your replies.

Not that expensive but cheaper than new oven! I had a lady who was so pleased with her repair she kindly donated some hot pasties to me. 😀

Donating hot pasties sounds like one satisfied customer Simon!! Bet she wouldn’t have made them for you on a day like today though 8).

I have no idea how much new ovens are – would a repair like this be £100 or £100’s. Sorry to ask – I know you can’t be specific but a rough idea.

Will try the thermometer thing and take it from there. What you have said makes sense though. Is 20-25 mins to heat up 180 deg C longer than it should take?

    Regards,
    H

All depends on labour charge in London. I would do it but in Cheshire. Try thermometer first and get back to us. smoke usually means over heating unless there is a lot of fat from grilling.
