The insurance company should back you up Tony, paying you for your visit and handling the call as you pass it back to them.
In all cases its doubtful your insurance covers you for work outside of “repairing” appliances.
No matter how grumpy a customer gets, rules are rules, no one will support you if you step outside of them.
It’s a good point you raise though, we too have had this happen to us, and no doubt it will again.
