i had today to fit a new replacement cooker hood above a gas cooker, problem is when got there the hole to vent out from old one is to low, when measured new one and height to hole it came to 350mm above cooker explained to custmor that it has to be 750mm he wanted me just to knock a new hole through wall for it. when i refused to do this stating that i was only there to fit not knock holes in walls.he got right grumpy and said was going to complain to insurance company. so what do you guys do about it?? just fit or put new hole in???

    No way!

If you start banging bl–dy great holes in the brickwork you’d better very carefully check your insurance as I’ll wager that you’re not covered for structural work. Knocking a hole that size out is considered structural.

Been there, done that, got the George Wimpey T-Shirt.

The insurance company should back you up Tony, paying you for your visit and handling the call as you pass it back to them.

In all cases its doubtful your insurance covers you for work outside of “repairing” appliances.

No matter how grumpy a customer gets, rules are rules, no one will support you if you step outside of them.

It’s a good point you raise though, we too have had this happen to us, and no doubt it will again.
