This machine is in excellent condition for its age, which is why I went to the trouble of replacing the spider/bearing recently 🙄
Now it works fine even on spin but somewhere around no5 on timer (cold wash/rinsing?) when the motor starts up the trip blows. Not every time, it’s intermittent. Now I thought, just like you, that I must not have sealed the stat grommets properly and that I would find a leak. But not so, the thing is watertight checked repeatedly even with a load of towels on spin.Pump is not leaking though it did feel a bit hot but I think that’s normal after running for a while?
I did not have my megger with me 😳 ,and my meter battery gave up just at that moment 👿
Anyway, I took the motor off and had a dekko. Brushes have about a year left on them. The wires to the field coil are insulated with a glass fibre sheath and the blue gunk with which this is impregnated got all over my hands so maybe it’s not doing its job.
I’ll make sure I take my megger when I go back next week. In the meantime has anyone any pointers? And does anyone think they might have a s/h (obsolete) motor for this one. (I forgot to lookat label, but it’s round, 1000 spin, 6 terminals fairly sure, fits easy with one fixed bolt and one sliding,metal drum)

How can you do a day’s work without a meggar?
Sorry Mike, but Martin’s right, there’s no guesswork here, you just can’t assume that a machine is safe to plug in without a meggar test!

I’m gonna be going back Wednesday. It’ll be interesting to see what the meter(with new battery) and megger each show. I’m hoping it’s just gonna be carbon build up round the motor and that it’ll respond to a good clean up.

If you have just changed the bearings and drum support, did you inspect the heater for damage when you had it out?

If the heater has a low insulation resistance it will still heat up. If the motor has a low insulation resistance it will still rotate, but if you add the two low insulation resistances together it may be enough to trip an RCD.
Your test meter will sort it out for sure.

Megger the heater with water in and after it’s been heating for a few minutes.

Thanks for the tip, Chris. We have soft water here and the only times I’ve ever needed to replace a heating element are when it has been grooved due to spider fracture (Hotpoints mainly of course). You lucky devils in hard water areas who get these nice easy little earners replacing heating elements don’t know how lucky you are. 😆

It was the motor. Showed 300k on multimeter and 150k on megger @500v. Armature as usual. No amount of cleaning caused any change.

Phidom’s motor is an Indesco 16P. I don’t think it would fit would it ❓ Anybody remember these things?
As the weekend is approaching, I thought this would be a good moment to try and get this thread up near the top of the list and pester you guys with it so you can all spend hours of your spare time sorting through your garages/attics. Think of it as a break from the infernal PC. And think how nice it’ll be to know where everything is again; for a little while.
While you’re there, don’t forget to look out for that AEG motor I’m after (see Classifieds).
