ParticipantHi Guys,
This machine is about 8 years old and has never given me any trouble. Based on the information here and the black dust underneath the machine i need to replace the bearings.
So i have ordered a set and will now be looking to take this on.
Before i start is there anything else i should be aware of, i have plenty of time so i wont be rushing this. From what i can see i need to extarct the drum from the machine, seperate the inner and outer parts and then replace the 2 baerings. put it all back to gether and job done.
So any helpful pointers before we start would be helpful.
Thanks in advance

I hope you know what you’ve let yourself in for.
Prepare to loose blood, sweat and tears.
I’d check the heater for damage. I rarely do that job, and don’t replace the heater.
Protect your hands and eyes, with gloves and goggles!
And unplug the machine before attemping a repair.

If the dust is very black rather than a rusty colour then you may have a more serious problem. The alloy casting that the bearings fit into can on rare occasions come loose within the nylon drum. This leads to the black dust, the bearings usually cause a rusty stain on the floor/chassis. For very good legal and safety reasons we cannot go into blow by blow details of a bearing change, safe to say you will need a degree of mechanical competance and of course to do the job ‘correctly’ the correct tools to refit the bearings without damaging them. you should also replace the drum seal, if you don’t it will almost certainly leak.

Ah, so if it isn’t the bearings that have gone what other parts may i need. i guess i’ll find out when i get the drum out.
I wasn’t expecting a blow by blow account, but any pointers to easy extraction of the drum for example.
Thanks for your reponce.
Regards
Paul

If the alloy bearing housing is loose in the nylon outer drum you will see black marks around the housing at the back, you may even see a small crack all the way around the housing. New machine time if the housing is loose. Only cure is a new outer drum, around £120 for the part.

Thanks for all your support, I have had the machine apart and replaced the bearings, the inner one had completly disintergrated. So much so that once the repament had been installed it was no longer a tight fit.
Put the whole machine back together and run it on a test wash but it still seemed to rubblem and knock on a spin so i guess it’s time for a replacement.
Looking at the hotpoint wt960.
Once again thanks for the support.

Great expectations, but misplaced I’m afraid.
If you allow for the fact that Hotpoint are now owned by Indesit and some of Indesit’s troublesome electronics have already crept into the Hotpoint machines, then Penguin 45’s advice is very sound. I have a customer with a 27 year old Hotpoint, the current machines will be lucky to see 7 years 😥November 21, 2005 at 11:19 pm #154170andy2
