    Hi all,

    I have had the above washer-dryer for two and a half years with no problems. However, after a standard wash today I went to use the dryer functionality but the machine started making some very disturbing noises when attempting to drain.

    Normally I can hear the waste water going down the drain during this process, but this doesn’t seem to be happening. I was not in the same room as the unit during the rest of the wash cycle so I don’t know if the same problem was occurring then, but when I select the drain option now the noises return.

    I have never had to do any maintenance on a washing machine before, so I was wondering where I should start before calling someone out. So far all I have checked is the output drainage pipe, which seems ok.

    Drop the hose into the washing up bowl and wait for the flow to stop. Remove kick panel and empty filter. Hands and knees to see, check around the propellor as well.

    I’d bet on a 5 pence piece……

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    I checked the filter as advised and did find a part of one of my shirts (!) but not much else. Replaced everything and tried to drain again, but although the water seems to be extracting now, the loud vibrating-type sound remains.

    In that case there’s still something in there by the sound of it rattling against the pump impellor. Either that or the pump has been damaged by whatever you removed.

    Check the filter again first of all and let us know 🙂

    With the power off……. Check that the impellor turns. It should resist and then “Ping” round a quarter of a turn at a time. If it is stiff, or if the impellor spins freely, the pump is damaged and needs replacing. You could run “Drain” with the cover off and check that the impellor is revolving…….

    Hmm… it spins freely 🙁

    Is it advised to service this myself or get someone in at this stage?

    If it spins freely, the impellor has broken the drive to the motor shaft – new pump time. Details above if you think you can do it yourself, or check the link in my signature for a UKW repairer.

    I ordered the part from you and attempted installation today. Below is the pump before the change:

    and this is the new one:

    Unfortunately, when I poured some water into the machine to test the new pump, the liquid just leaked straight through the unit. 😥 I have checked the rubber pipes for damage and ensured the clamps and fully securing them to the pump, but can’t see the problem.

    Incidentally, it seemed as though the water was leaking from this part on the left:

    although it doesn’t seem to be connected to the rest of the pump…?

    Any ideas, or should I leave this to the pros now?

    Marc, can you email spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk please, I think it may have a hairline crack (damaged in transit) and I’ll sort it for you 🙂

    Hi,

    After having removed the pump to return I found where the leak was coming from. If you look at the pumps side-by-side:

    you can see that the new one on the left has a hole right the way through! The old one has this protrusion blocked at one end.

    Comparing inside both of them:

    you can see the hole in the new one on the left.

    Should I still return this item or is there something I should do to block this hole?

    The pump could possibly be swopped onto the old filter chamber for a quick fix. You may need torx bits for this.

    Can’t you just use the motor part from the new pump and the filter housing from the old one?

    I will investigate this evening, although I would prefer to use a replacement without this hole rather than start taking things apart. I take it that the replacement wouldn’t have the same problem?
