    Hi. We purchased a Hotpoint WD860 in October 2005. Since then we have had the door replaced twice due to scratches on the glass from the drum. On the first instance these were quite substantial. Now, two doors on we have the same problem – scratched glass door – despite very careful attention to a balanced load and low spin speed.

    The engineer suggested the machine should not be used at 1600!! I guess he would not write a statement to that effect (and presumably lose his job).

    Has anyone else experienced a similar fault with this machine?

    It is something that we have seen on around 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of Hotpoint machines over the last thirty years, and to a greater or lesser degree on all others depending on the make and model. My own 1600 spin WMA62 has many scratches on the door. My wife just bangs the machine on and lets it get on with it, however when I do the washing I always reduce the spin speed down to around 1100 rpm or even lower. The amount of water you will extract at 1600 rpm as opposed to 1100 rpm is miniscule, the downside of the very fast spin is severe wear and tear, excessive noise, scratched doors etc.
    It does not have any effect on the machine and is purely a cosmetic problem.

    PS. I cannot tell the wife how to use the machine for fear of the, ‘deaf & dumb breakfast’ syndrome. 😆

    Whilst you can still enjoy the benefit of the manufacturers guarantee, I would call them in to replace the damaged part yet again. Whilst Hotpoint machines do have this apparent design weakness, I would also suggest you do not accept the status quo.

    If reducing the spin speed is the only true answer to the problem (as the Hotpoint engineer suggests) then I would claim your machine is not fit for the purpose for which it was designed.

    A free replacement machine might be the only acceptable answer perhaps?

    To be honest, the old Hotpoint 1850 range used to cut right through the plastic door ‘glass’ fairly often, and they only spun at 1000 max. More to do with design of door, drum and suspension.
