does anyone know how easy/hard it is to set up your own web page…

That’s pretty easy in all honesty and something I’ve been meaning to do for a while now.
I do have a very basic template (somewhere) that I made up for Kevin’s site, http://www.domapprepairs.co.uk it is simple and clean, but really it doesn’t need to be much more than an online business card. It is also pretty easy to expand on it.
One of the problems I’ve seen with a lot of sites (one of mine included) is that there’s really too much information on there for a small business and the graphics are all to pot. IMO it has to look pretty decent as you’re trying to sell yourself and to do that far better simple, clean and clear as being too busy and looking “amateur”. But of course that’s just my opinion.

web site looked quite good…as you said you dont need mach more than that….our local paper can host the page…. but can you just upload to the www for free.local paper may have an advantage as local customers can search all buisness,s listed with paper ???
Yeah, but how many people actually use the local search facility balanced against how much it costs?

local search only £1.00p/w…this low fee does suggest …low traffic ??
im mainly intrested on how you build ,host and get thing thing onto the http://www.???would i be able to buy the www ??? is this a viable option ?? 😀
ps yell.com will lat you build your own and then host it for £560..not for me just yet

i know nothing about hosting or how to upload to www,hence exploring the yell.com idea, but as i said a bit to pricey..
had a mess about with yell.com,s site builder and it was quite easy to build a reasonable looking page…..can you get these site builders elsewhere ie a down load version???your confusios 💡
Yeah, now all I need to do is dig out the template. 😕
IIRC it was done using Dreamworks, but it was pretty basic so any decent HTML editor should be able to read it okay, including Notepad but I wouldn’t recommend that. 😉

If you have M/S Word loaded on your PC you can mess around with several web page templates and create you own web page/s. It’s a good learning tool to familiarise yourself with at least! 🙂

cheers martin i didnt realise you could do this with m/s word..
ill go and have a look…just a thought i wonder if you could use yells site builder and then save it, prob-not ??

That included going to PC World and buying M/S Frontpage 2000 software, buying a URL and getting someone to host my site for me. So by my calculations I have saved over £2000 on Yells (***???&&&!!!) prices in that time. Check my website out and you will see the lay-out is just like many templates on M/S Word…
…..it works for me AND my site gets top listing on most search engines (very important) 😉 (e.g. Type in washing machine repair in berkshire – see who comes out on top)

I used Frontpage as well. From the templates or design from scratch its dead easy, mostly like using Word or publisher for normal posters etc.
I signed up with http://www.supanet.com years ago and they give you a free website plus the usual email addresses etc, but their load up for the website is a doddle. Go to my webspace and as long as you’ve saved your site and all the images etc to one folder , you can browse your folder and upload it to the net. Easy Peasy 😀 .
They also have a step by step web builder which helps you create a simple page.Then what I did to simplify the address, is buy adomain and hosting package (works out about £50 for a year) and just direct the domain host to your site on supanet. So when you write www. mywebspace.co.uk etc it will automatically show your supanet site.

I use frontpage! 😀 Just this morning actually (but still aint finished the products page)
It’s a little spoony sometimes though, especially if your making tables.
We got a few meg of webspace free off BT with the business boardband, and then we bought a domain name, and linked it. You got to pay extra if you want extensions.
I’m trying my best to get onto search engines, but I’m failing 🙁 But people manage to find the site somehow.
If you type ‘website template’ into google, millions come up!
