How long do you give yourself for a job in a customers house if you got 10 jobs a day how much time would you spend in the customers house?
say if you know what the fault is(bearings) and not got the parts with u and have to order how long would u expect to be there for, also if to fit carbon brushes to hpt machine, as started to do work for D@G and had complaints that i work to quick…

From who ,Not D&G surely as they pay a fixed rate so they wouldnt be bothered if you were there 5 mins or an hour
I try and pre diagnose as much as possible and am usually spot on so the cust hasn’t had two visits.
good to hear you got some more work, D&G are a good agency to have ,look after them .

Why ❓ ❓ Unless its a real pig, time wasted uplifting and returning and chance of scratching/denting in transit. Its not cost effective.

we used to get a lot of them complaints, I used to tell the customer that next time ask for the doddery old engineer that farts about for an hour trying this, that and the other before deciding it was the brushes all along. Then I would turn up!

many years ago when running late I went to a 1504 fitted a pump tested and left in about 20 mins with the customer complaining “bit steep only been here 20 mins” next job 1504 needs a pump! Im still late so 20 mins later “there you go all done”
” what just like that? ..well it makes a change to meet someone who knows what he’s doing and dont hang about keep the change have a drink Ill know where to come next time”

    same approach diffrent result

..and dont you just love it when they multiply the “5 minutes” (its always 5 minutes, regardless) you took to repair their machine by 12 and then by 8 and then declare that you earn like £4800 a day! :clown:

I was told in the dim and distant past by a Hotpoint manager that I was doing too many 20 minute calls. This was at the time of the early 95 flush doors when door wont open was up to four calls a day, and the rest were brushes.

I start off booking calls at 1 1/2 hour intervals then slot in extra ones in between according to guestimated length of the jobs. This can mean that on quiet days I can be at a loose end between jobs but there are various things I do with such time like shopping, paying bills, changing library books and visiting friends. My callout charge covers them for an hour of work but obviously I can’t promise that the whole hour will be in one session.

I tent to book in 4/5 jobs for the morning, and 4/5 in the afternoon. But this can sometimes turn into 7/8 jobs because of the ‘well-you’re-just-up-the-road-from-this-job’ syndrome. Unless I know that a job will take a long time (Bosch D/W heater) then I will allow extra time.

And any job that I predict is a BER, doesn’t get a slot. It’s classed as a five minute condemnation job, which includes the time taken to try and sell a new machine.

Don’t waste a second longer than the job takes, unless she is very attractive! 😆

Also don’t forget it very much depends on who is paying for your services?

If it’s a contract (i.e D & G) type job then your “customer” is D & G and likely your remit is to get in fast, sort it and off to the next. The ‘appliance owner’ cannot expect anyone to hang about wasting time on the pittence Wp’s pay you anyway. The downside of this is if the fault is not resolved then the WP gets an earbashing from the owner and that then begins an enquiry as to who, when and why?

10 jobs a day under these circumstances is quite the norm I would imagine. Although I very much doubt those poor souls that specialise in fixing built-in appliances will agree with that or indeed have such a daily completed rate?

Fully chargeable to the owner is therefore a different ball-game and the bar can be raised in this case, greater time spent equals a better job and more money. 10 jobs a day under these circumstances is not only an extremely enviable position to be in, but a bit too much work to bear on a daily basis. Especially if you cover 100’s of square miles, then I would even suggest it an impossibility to keep it up for very long or enjoy a social life. 🙄

6 jobs a day, cruising the countryside, no rush, a few teabreaks along the way and home by 2pm…….that’s me 8)

very little of what we do is physically difficult, therefore they are paying us for what we know as well as the convenience of having the parts there and then. so in my opinion the time it takes to do a job is irrelevant. mind you i don’t have a call out fee. i charge a fixed labour charge payable only if the machine is repaired. to date i’ve only had one complaint.
with regards to integrated repairs. i tell them to get it out before i arrive.
don’t forget that the actual time taken to repair an appliance should include the journey time to get there.
