A new device has been unveiled which could provide homeowners with a convenient way of monitoring how much energy they are using – and how much it is costing.

The magnetic device, which is about the size of a credit card, could be attached to appliances such as washing machines or refrigerators and connected wirelessly to the national electricity grid, reports the EE Times.

Using this information, a light on the card can show the owner if their energy usage is above, similar or below the average level, enabling them to adjust it if necessary.

Although the invention is still at the prototype stage, if developed it could help consumers who want to improve their eco-friendliness and possibly save some money on energy bills.

The card was unveiled at GridWeek 2007, which is a four-day event in the US for energy grid organisations to share ideas and potential collaborations.
