As if it wasn’t confusing enough, the EU looks set to introduce an even more baffling energy labelling system. Green MEPs are accusing the Swedish Presidency of “˜greenwashing’ the energy efficiency labelling scheme for domestic appliances.
Following discussion between the EU Council, EU Commission and EU Parliament, the Swedish Presidency is apparently backing proposals to allow the introduction of new classifications of up to A++++ for consumer white goods. So, we have to count the pluses and, there’s no minuses!
“The introduction of A+ and A++ grades has already compromised the A-G energy efficiency scale,” says Finnish Green MEP Satu Hassi. “This new proposal promotes total greenwash for white goods.”
Under the proposals, nearly every new product on the market would have an A rating, making a mockery of the system, according to the Greens. The UK has also spoken out against similar proposals, arguing that it is confusing for consumers.
“We must regularly review existing energy efficiency grades ““ not add to the top of the scale ““ to drive industry innovation and to maintain meaningful guidance for consumers,” says Hassi.
