Participantthe process of changing the bearings. Haynes Manual and Spares at the ready..
The back is off and the unit is on the floor face down. I’ve just taken off the concrete block.
Fingers crossed, I’ll be able to achieve this tonight… if not I’ll fall flat on my face and have to stump up for a new machine.
By way of rest breaks, I’ll update this thread as I go along… maybe if any of you want to chip in with words or warning or support, please feel free.

Okay….
Motors’ off, tubes and stuff going into the side of the drum are off.
There’s an awful lot of bolts holding the front part of the drum to the back and they’re all pointed the other way. Nothing like the ‘back half of the drum that comes away’ as described in the manual.
I’m beginning to think thw whole drum has to come out before I can start anything like getting at the bearings.

Hmm, its definitely slow going.
I’ve got it so that the drum is only attached by the top springs and bottom suspension.
The plastic cotter pins in the bottom suspension are being a pig to fetch out at the moment. Probably quite easy to pop in, but to take out is another matter.

there is a lug at the bottom of the pin you need to presss in before they come out even so they are a pain
did you detach the door seal from the front of the cabinet? its hard work if you havent 😕August 8, 2006 at 7:38 pm #184508tdubya

I was at the point of giving up when I finally worked out how to detach the door seal and that gave me motivation to continue.
Thanks for the tip, I’ll persevere with the lugs.
My target tonight is to get the whole drum out and then call it a day because I need an early night due to an early start tomorrow.

Cotter pins are out and there’s the first sign of blood on the floor…
Nothing serious though, just caught myself on a electrical lug on the thermostat.

I’ve hit that wall of ‘time to go to bed’ now so I’m going to pack up and tidy things away. I hope to resume operations tomorrow night.
But, I’ve hit another wall in the form of an hex bolt holding the spider which is steadfastly refusing to move. Is this because…
A – Its stuck fast and needs WD40
B – I need to turn it counter clockwise
C – I’m just too tired and weak to do anymore tonight ?
G’night

I did persevere some more and managed to get the hex bolt out with some persuading, then the spider needed persuading with a hammer down the middle of the shaft.
I can see now the cause of all the trouble was a leaking seal which allowed water to get into the bearings and cause them to get rusty. The seal and two sets of bearings are still inside and I’ve left them overnight with some WD40 spray. Hopefully, getting these out tomorrow will be relatively easy.
Now it is g’night…. zz

good luck on the bearings but take extreme care not to damage the shaft when taking it out and pushing back in a hammer in the wrong place can ruin it

We are enjoying the blow by blow accounts of your bearing change mission tdubya. We are sharing your pain and longing for the next exciting instalment! 🙂
Will the WD40 penetrate the bearings? How will he get them out? Is the drum shaft damaged?
Stay tuned! 😉

Well, its only a short piece tonight, because I was in London all day today and only had a little bit of time to work on the washing machine. I made it my target to remove the bearings and then call it a day again.
The rubber seal was the toughest cookie of the three…. Eventually with a small claw hammer I was able to pull it out. I pretty well destroyed it in the process (not the housing though), so it won’t be sealing anymore !
The two bearings I hammered out and was careful to tap only the bearings themselves. They’re now both out and I’ve done an initial clean of the housings. The small housing (the one that was actually undamaged I think) is as smooth as a baby’s bum. The larger one looks quite good as well, but there are small signs of marking on one side which may be pitting, I don’t know. But, overall I would say it looks in good condition.
The shaft ? Hmm, I’ve not looked at that in detail yet. I’m thinking of taking both parts down to the parts shop for a second opinion before I start re-assembling the machine tomorrow night.
I’ll let you know how I get on tomorrow….
G’night

I’m back onto it now and I have to confess to cheating slightly.
I took the drum enclosure down to the shop where they kindly knocked the bearings and seals back in for me. I guess I was just too nervous about damaging them and rendering all my efforts useless.
The 2837375no. bolts are in place now that hold the front and back together. (Its more like 18-20 bolts actually, but it felt like more)
I’m now at the stage of putting the drum back into the carcase.
