Hi I really hope someone can give me some advice, I’ve searched on the forum and followed the advice already given about smelly dishwasher problems but still having trouble 🙁
We have a Tricity Bendix Eco Save dishwasher, it’s about 10 years old. It’s washed fine up until the last few months. The problem being the plates come out looking as clean as ever but they smell like they’ve been washed in stagnant ditch water. I’m thinking it has come to the end of its useful life, has it? Or can the problem be solved? I feel I have tried everything.

Have you cleaned the machine itself using special dishwasher cleaning tablets? Have you cleared the crud build-up at the bottom of the door (inside)? Is the very bottom of the sump (under the fine filter) clear and clean? Are the top basket and bottom basket spray arm holes clean and clear? Are you using decent tablets like Fairy Active Bursts or are you using the cheap supermarket branded rubbish?…..questions! questions! 😉

Thanks for your quick response 😀The spray arms and sump are fine. I’ve just given the door a really good clean, it was pretty manky. Also I do use the supermarket tablets? Are they really no good then?

‘Cheap’ is tempting, ‘rubbish’ is no more than that. 😉
I think that clarifies the situation for you and after all said and done may well help in solving your smelly plate problem. 😉

Just been out and bought some of those active burst things, half price!!! need to stock up as I don’t fancy paying full price.

Are you using decent tablets like Fairy Active Bursts or are you using the cheap supermarket branded rubbish?…..questions! questions!
I’ve never used anything other than Lidal’s or Asda’s cheepest and have never had a problem. I do clean the dishwasher out every 3-4 months with a cup of white vinager on a hot wash.

I refer you to page 132 second paragraph of the cleaning bible by kim and Aggie.
You can also clean the machine by running it empty with a glassfull of distilled (white) vinegar in the upper rack. At the end of the wash programme it will be left full of water. Examine the remaining water, if there are gritty particales in it the filters or spray arms may be blocked. Check both and run repeated cycles with vinegar to help shift limescale deposits from the water jets, until the remaining water is clear.

If you would be kind enough to state when and where you did your detergent training, who your trainer was and your certificate of competence number, I’ll happily debate this with you.
Otherwise, it’s old wives tales and adds nothing to the technical excellence of these forums..
The only acceptable method is to ensure that the machine is kept as clean as possible, especially with regard to door seals and filters and that a proprietary cleaning agent is used on a regular basis. Vinegar is not a proprietary cleaning agent, it contains acetic acid and will release fumes when heated.

So, you don’t actually have an answer, then? If it works for you, that’s fine and good, but it is not a recommended practise. Bear in mind that the professionals run this site. We expend time, effort and money into learning and researching the correct methods of making all appliances function correctly – your previous post undermines that.
We could draw the comparison with cleaning auto wahers. Baking soda – doesn’t work. Soda crystals – doesn’t work. Bleach – doesn’t work. There’s only one right way to do the job, we know what it is and we will promote it.
That said, if you are genuinely interested in these processes, the UKW trainers tour the country regularly and will probably have no objection to you sitting in on a session in your area. A word with admin@ukwhitegoods.co.uk should tell you what’s going on.

Penguin45.Ok all I can say is It dose work for me and I know hundreds of people on the How clean is your house forum and cleaning queens forum that do it and find it works aswell. Its cheeper than dishwasher cleaners and is natural so kinder to the enviroment. White vinager has been used for years in cleaning and is a very affective limescale disolver, I have used in on kettles and coffee makers, and shower heads. I was only trying to give a cleaning tip.

Look, it’s not a problem – we do actually welcome everybody’s input and nothing is ever deleted (except blatant spam). There is some truth in all the “folk tales” with regards to all manner of appliances – the difference is that this is a unique forum, in that the professional repairers run it. I do wonder why sometimes (some sort of alltruistc instinct that wants to see it done “right”?). Alternatively, there are the DIY forums, run by amateurs with absolutely no safety sense…..
I should say that about a quarter of our work is to do with “smelly appliances”. The tragedy is that this situation arises because people simply do not understand the correct way to use and maintain their appliances. The boil wash with a washer. A cleaning product with the dishwasher. Changing the filter in your Dyson vacuum with something approaching a religious fervour. Cleaning the fluff out of your tumble dryer. They’re all open to misuse – we could save so much time and the public its money by following the advice available in these forums……..
When you get a moment, have a read through the Articles section – so much basic information available to everybody, for free.
